When Ken Sherman agreed to serve as interim director for Bigger Vision during this winter season beginning in October 2015, he brought with him a willingness to be told no. It would come in handy.

"Most non-profits are run by people with a tremendous passion but who don't know how to run a business," said Sherman, who sees his key role as raising funds and community awareness. "I learned to run a business by making mistakes. Just not the same ones over and over."

Sherman served as a volunteer at several non-profits through the years.
Educated at UGA, he left a career as a respiratory therapist in the mid-90's, to become CEO of an aviation cleaning service with 170 employees and nine locations nationally. After briefly dipping his toe into chilly political waters in Henry County, he and his wife Joleen embraced the opportunity to travel her nursing career afforded them, now that their three children were adults. It was from a 13-week stint in Cordoba, AK that Ken and Joleen arrived back in Athens, where family illnesses requiring their immediate attention awaited.
"Having known Ken for my
entire adult life, I was thrilled that he was willing and able to join the Bigger Vision team. His rock solid faith, business and life skills, and professional demeanor make him a tremendous asset to our organization," said Scott Cochran, past president.

"God put me here to do this at this time because God sees the greater needs. This is definitely a God thing," Sherman said. He added that if money
were no object, he would triple the available beds immediately. "The phones start ringing at 4 o'clock, and by 4:06 the beds are full."

One-third of the "guests" are women.

A Time of Healing Prayer
at Bigger Vision

Sunday, January 24, 2016
 3:30 – 5:00 PM
Luke 4:18-19
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

St. James United Methodist Church has been offering healing prayer services to their congregation and community since the spring of 2013.  It has been an exciting adventure to see our Lord Jesus Christ fulfilling the verses above in our midst.  Prayer Ministers listen, love, and pray with the goal of healing, freedom, and wholeness for each prayer recipient.  We are a channel for the love of God, and for the comfort and power of the Holy Spirit. Everyone is welcomed for individual time with a team of two prayer ministers to pray for their needs and concerns with complete confidentiality. There have been many healings and breakthroughs as people met Jesus at these gatherings.
*Mentoring at Bigger Vision does not mean being a counselor or a life coach.  Our nightly visitors already know how to get help in the form of clothing and food. The people we serve need most of all someone who knows how to listen.

"Perhaps we should find another word instead of mentoring as that implies more of a long-term commitment than is needed at the shelter," says Interim Director Ken Sherman. "Just be an attentive, accepting companion for an evening and see where it goes, if anywhere."

At Bigger Vision, the most effective mentoring begins simply, with a conversation or perhaps playing a game as with a friend. The opportunity to just listen will occur naturally. Don't miss it.
