Mitchell Holland didn’t become homeless due to unfortunate circumstances. At age 39, he left a six-figure job, sold everything and gave it all away, so he could "follow the teachings of Christ."
“Homelessness is a condition of society not to be confused with my desire to leave it all behind,” he says. But a good work ethic followed him into the streets and, after staying as at Bigger Vision as a guest, he ended up volunteering, eventually becoming shelter manager and a highly valued member of the board.
“He helped put systems into place to provide a structured environment for people whose lives lack structure," says Interim Director Ken Sherman.
Bigger Vision President Mark Bugg says that eight years ago, when he was drowning in concerns about the shelter, "God sent me Mitchell."
“People grate on my soul,” admits Holland, but says what drove him to leave society’s demands behind is God’s will. “My constant desire is to live a life of faith. You have to be careful what you pray for."

Merry Christmas and Seasons Greetings
It is my hope that this letter finds you and yours well during this holiday season of giving thanks and celebrating the blessing of Christmas. Please accept my personal thanks to all of you that have supported Bigger Vision Athens with your prayers, time, talents and financial resources. It is because of your generosity that we can continue to serve our homeless brothers and sisters. As we quickly approach the end of the year, we notice with an even higher degree, the impact Bigger Vision has on the population we serve. As we give thanks for the many blessings we have, let’s continue to remember those less fortunate as we prayerfully consider ways to share more with others. Bigger Vision has had a very busy start to our 2015-2016 winter emergency shelter schedule with over 100 individual souls served already. Every night since mid-October we have filled most or all 36 beds. Phone reservation lines open at 4 p.m., and almost every day we are completely booked by 4:06 p.m. It is heartbreaking that we sometimes have to turn people away or refer them elsewhere. The needs will only grow as the nights get colder and longer. So as we deck the halls, trim the trees and look upon the twinkling lights, let’s continue to remember in prayer and cheerful giving our homeless brothers and sisters whom we are all called to serve. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Ken Sherman Interim Director Bigger Vision Community Shelter
