View Calendar
Check your calendar then check ours to see what times volunteers are needed. Then contact us let us know when you will be available to help. You can also specify what type of help you want to provide, i.e. sleep overnight, serve a meal, or be a mentor.
You may be aware that every night a volunteer sleeps at the shelter to provide a stabilizing influence for our guests.
We currently have fewer than ten men and women volunteering in this role, which is leaving some nights not covered, or others having to stay multiple nights in a given week. We desperately need an additional 8 to 10 overnight volunteers NOW.
Our goal is for each person only to stay overnight every other week and have a buddy who rotates with them on their chosen night.
We also would like to have an additional five or six people who can’t stay overnight on a regular basis, but who are willing to do so when conflicts arise with our regular overnight volunteers.
  •  Arrive at the shelter by 9 p.m.
  •  Sleep upstairs by the emergency exit
  •  Arise at 5:30 a.m. to help set up breakfast
  •  Remain at the shelter until 7 a.m. to assist guests and help clean up after breakfast.

Please contact Jim Meunier at (706)338-4707 or email him at to discuss which nights you are available to serve.
Thank you for prayerfully considering how you can help us meet this urgent nightly need. If you are not able to meet this need personally, please ask someone you know to help.

P.S. – We also need more evening staff volunteers from around 7-9 p.m. if that is a better fit for your schedule. To see all meal and volunteer needs, please visit and click the volunteer calendar.

My name is Mark Bugg, and I am president of the board of the Bigger Vision of Athens.  I am self-employed and have been a volunteer and board member for 12 years.  My beautiful wife Barbie and I have been married for 30 God-filled years, and we have blessed with three children and seven grandchildren. This is my fourth term as president of the board, and it remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  As a matter of fact for six months of each year that we are operating, it is my life.

I had the distinct pleasure of serving with Barbara and Richard Andersen for most of my tenure at the Bigger Vision and the standard set by those two wonderful people has all of us striving to serve the homeless of our community better and better every year.

As you will read in other newsletter articles, there is a constant need for volunteers at the shelter.  From preparing a meal to overnight volunteers to mentoring our guests and service on the board, there are many opportunities for all in our community to assist the homeless.

We welcome your participation so please check our website and find your spot to get involved.

In His Service,
Mark Bugg, President

My name is Jim Meunier and I am a member of the board of directors of the Bigger Vision of Athens shelter.  My wife Joy and I have lived in Athens for almost 50 years. We have two children and six grandchildren, all in the Athens area.
I have been a volunteer and board member of the Bigger Vision for 17 years, since the days at St. James United Methodist Church and each year is more rewarding than the last.  My job on the board is volunteer coordinator, which means it is my job to schedule the many volunteers we need each season.
You will read elsewhere in this newsletter of the opportunity for service at the shelter.  The primary areas of service are:
  • Prepare Meals
  • Evening Volunteers
  • Mentors
  • Overnight Volunteers
Please check our website and volunteer calendar and find a slot you can join us the shelter.

Pat Allen, Director of Community Relations

Our 4th Annual Charity Dinner

This year’s dinner featured retired Director of Community Relations, Pat Allen, as our keynote speaker (shown at right). Pat spoke with great eloquence about the scriptural basis for being humble servants, as all of our volunteers continue so well to do. After the dinner, many guests commented on how powerful and inspirational his remarks were to them personally. On behalf of our shelter guests and the board, thank you, Pat!
Betsy Butler and the awesome! folks at First United Methodist have helped Bigger Vision for many years, and this year was no different. They and our generous sponsors donated everything — making 100% of the funds raised available to meet the shelter needs this season.
Our incredibly generous volunteers and dinner participants gave more than $24,500. We can’t thank you enough for your blessings.

Please thank the following organizations for their generous support:
  • Homeless Help Card
  • Biggum’s BBQ
  • Chick-Fil-A
  • Athens Janitorial
  • Heyward Allen Cadillac, Buick, GMC, Toyota, Scion,
  • Living Hope Church
  • Athens Ford
  • The Link Church
  • Chastain & Associates Insurance
  • The Flower & Gift Basket.
I would be remiss if I did not thank our table hosts and hostesses for time spent inviting everyone to the dinner. I won’t list each name, but know that your efforts are greatly appreciated. And it goes without saying that our Bigger Vision Board is vital to helping do everything necessary to make the dinner a success – many thanks to each of you.
We started on time and finished two minutes late — only because yours truly doesn’t know when to hush. Everyone also enjoyed a delicious meal — served in under 15 minutes — a definite improvement from past years.
We are humbled and blessed by God’s abundant provision and blessing, provided through so many of you. Without the continued donations of your time, talent and treasure, Bigger Vision simply doesn’t exist. Thank you, and may God continue to bless all that you do in His name!
