Volume 24 Issue 7 - July 2016

Meeting Monday, July 11th.

Hello Marines and Associates,

These past few weeks have been busy. We want to continue moving forward below you’ll see we have a family BBQ schedule in August. I hope that each of you can make it.
We have several members who have passed away, sick or in distressed. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. I would also like to keep our Police Officers in your prayers. Many have served in the Marines; we currently have one member who is part of the San Antonio Police Department Officer Chris Redman. Sr. Vice will not be in attendance for our meeting, he has lost his son in law recently to an ailment, he served in the Dallas Police Department. Sr. Vice and his wife Joann will be attending the Dallas shooting Memorial Service.
The summer heat has been extremely hot. Please use good judgment if you are going to be outside for long periods of time to wear the right clothes and drink pliantly of water.
For those who need some relief from the heat, The Marine Corps League is providing box fans to our active members. Simple contact one of your staff officers or myself for more information.
Our MCL Fundraiser is being to take shape, we have a First place (Pistol) and third place prize (Marine Corps Knife). Does anyone know of a good 2nd place prize? Please contact Sr. Vice or myself for donations.
In our last meeting we discussed the Marine Corps League and San Antonio Young Marines having a building of its own. A place where we can use for our own function and possibly as a rentable hall, provide community meals for those in need. This can also serve as a San Antonio small Marine Museum.
Revenue Producing ideas if we are able to get a building how can we sustain ourselves and pay monthly expenses? Raise money for each of our organization for their operating expenses. Special Events, Weddings, Parties, store front for Marine Corps memorabilia, Community Kitchen,
rent out for training and seminars, Veteran social club and Veteran career fairs.
We are looking for committee members who would like to help.
Our Marines Helping Marines Program continues. If you wish to help during the ‘Taco Thursday’ Breakfasts being served at 0900, you are more than welcome. Contact Bob Otto for more information.

The Alamo Detachment 315 can't continue its mission without your help and participation, please become active in your Detachment. Remember, Marines are Marines forever.
Let us not forget that Marines and Corpsmen are still in harm's way. Please keep them and their loved ones in your daily prayers.
Our next regular meeting will takes place Monday, July 11th at 1900, Social Hour starts at 6:30 p.m. Where: VFW Post 9186, located at 650 VFW Blvd, San Antonio, TX 78214.

Carry the Load

Memorial Day in San Antonio held an event called Carry The Load, it is a non-profit dedicated to restoring the true meaning of Memorial Day. Jr. Vice Commandant Jimmie Tadlock attended as part of the committee for this event.

All to often I see the younger generation ask what does Memorial Day mean and have no clue. This past 4th of July when asked, who were some of the founding fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence or from who we won Independence from. Not many people knew the answer. Each of you are considered to be History teachers, you know and have lived the history...pass it on.
What’s next for SAYM?

With the Camo Cool Down off their plates, the San Antonio Young Marines plan to put something else on them: BBQ! On August 27, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, hop on your hog and head to Caliente Harley Davidson for barbequed chicken and sausage. Be prepared to purchase some baked goods, enter a raffle, and listen to some solid live music.

Make plans to join the Young Marines at Family Fun Day on August 6, at Bullis County Park (27583 Blanco Rd, San Antonio, TX 78258) near Boerne. Beginning at 11:00 AM, Young Marines and their families, along with MCL members and their families, will compete in relay races, volleyball, sack races, and more. (A domino game could possibly break out…we can only hope.) The toughest competition of all is the fan-favorite Oreo® game. The Young Marine Registered Adult Volunteers (RALs) will serve up a delicious lunch of burgers, dogs, and all the fixins. It’s a great day for building relationships and enjoying life.

REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY will be held August 13, 2016 to honor Medal of Honor recipient John E. Kilmer the only Medal of Honor recipient buried at the San Jose Burial Park, a civilian cemetery. John Kilmer was a Hospital Corpsman served with the 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, Fleet Marine Division during the Korean War. In the “Bunker Hill” attack on August 12, 1952, he gave the ultimate sacrifice: his life for that of another. Kilmer crawled to and shielded a wounded Marine with his body during the battle. The marine survived. Kilmer was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.

The San Antonio Young Marines will be providing a Color Guard.

We have recently lost two of our members Ramiro Martinez and Ronnie Reininger, both were valued members of the League. Please keep them in your prayers. They will be truly missed but not forgotten.
