Captain Dale Pederson: 2019 Maritime Person of the Year

On October 10, the Port of Seattle and Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Council of American Master Mariners (CAMM) hosted their annual luncheon in honor of the Maritime Person of the Year. We are thrilled to share that this year's award, presented by CAMM President Captain Richard Klein, went to our very own Captain Dale Pederson. CAMM recognized Captain Dale's lifetime commitment to the Seattle maritime community and, notably, his outstanding contributions as Senior Captain of the VIRGINIA V. Captain Dale has served with the Virginia V Foundation for nearly 30 years. During that time, he has become a fixture of the VIRGINIA V community. He has presided over 125 weddings, mentored hundreds of crew members, and made countless passengers' day when they held the wheel or blew the steam whistle. Through the environment he created aboard VIRGINIA V, he has led the ship to her greatest successes, from distant port visits to memorial services and instructional cruises for young students. We hope you'll join our crew and staff in congratulating Captain Dale on this achievement and thanking him for his leadership!

From the Archives...

ABOVE: 85 years ago, the month of November found the Virginia V in the shipyard, badly in need of a total rebuild. Winds of 70mph smashed the ship into Olalla Dock on October 21st, 1934, resulting in the extensive damage seen here in this photograph. A dock piling caused the hole seen punched through the Wheelhouse, and the entire starboard side of the vessel was stove in. Here, the ship is waiting to have a repair estimate at Lake Union Dry Dock (note the smokestacks of the old City Light powerplant in the background). The Virginia V was rebuilt in 6 weeks, returning to her regular West Side service on December 6th. Photograph by John Snapp.
