This pizza party: the extrude-off!
The race to the finish!
Titan Aero Extruder
We are inviting our customers to enter the extrude-off competition. The items entered have to be designed by the participant and should be sufficient different from open designs from the community (judged by RRW).

Because last time the extruders took a lot of time to setup and run, part of the competition tests were not completed. Tomorrow evening we will continue the contest and we will finally have winner!

Megatronics version 3.2 now available from stock
Megatronics Version 3.2 overview
The latest version of the Megatroncis is here, this version has number 3.2. The board features the same trusted Atmega2560 chipset and the formfactor has not changed (also the screw holes are in the same position).

The new features are explained below:

The version 3.2 now features a pin-out for all the axis. This allows easy connection to external stepper drivers, mainly used to connect the more beefy Nema23 motors available.

Nextion display's are a treat for any 3D Printer. The Megatronics now features a easy to use 4pin connector for use with these displays.

All other open headers on the version 3.1 are now also occupied with easy to use connectors.

Version 3.1 already has screw terminals for your Thermocouple. But after feedback from the community the size of the terminal has been reduced as the wires on the Thermocouple are usually tiny and were a bit if a hassle to connect to the older version.

Last but not least, the power terminals were given a bit of a upgrade to a size larger. Allowing you to use thicker wire for your heated bed more easily.

TU Delft Designing Contest

Annually, the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the Delft University of Technology organizes a designing contest. Eighty groups of first-year students try to complete a demanding challenge to the best of their abilities. This year, the challenge was to design and build an operational container handler, to scale.

TU delft design contest team

We are a group of six enthusiastic students who have taken part in this competition. For the past twenty weeks we have been designing and building our own container handler. To accomplish the challenge, we went through an intensive designing process.

First, an elaborate list of requirements was carefully analysed. Knowing what the main parts of the challenge were, we started thinking of solutions to each of these parts. After this open minded, creative period, a number of these solutions were channeled into three concept handlers. These concepts were then carefully thought through and reviewed. This review resulted in a final concept choice.

Our handler consists of six main sections: the frame, the beam, the trolley, the clamp, the counter weights and the transmission. The structural parts of the handler are made of aluminum profiles and bended sheet metal. The trolley moves along the beam, carrying the clamp. This movement is (partially) mirrored by two counter weights, to prevent the handler from tilting.

The power transmission from the motor through the system is where RepRapWorld comes in. All the moving parts are being driven by GT2 profile timing belts and pulleys. In total, 13 meters of belt and 8 pulleys have been implemented in the handler. It took some testing to figure out the perfect setting for the transmission system. The main issue we had was that we were trying to move quite a lot of mass with relatively small pulleys. The total mass of the counter weights and a loaded clamp was over 4.6 kilograms. Eventually, the best combination of tension and surface area on the pulleys was found. Using this setting, the handler was able to move the scaled containers over a distance of two meters within seconds.

Container handler in action during competition

June 20th was the day of the contest. At 9 a.m., we assembled the handler at the market square in Delft. Within five minutes, as much of the nine containers as possible would have to be moved. During the first try, a slight struggle occured with the clamp. Not all containers were moved due to this problem. A couple of adjustments were made to ensure a smooth second try. These adjustments paid off, as all containers were moved in 4:24 minutes. This performance put us in first place. Even though a number of other groups had exceptional attempts, our time was not matched. Out of eighty teams, we had managed to build the fastest and most reliable handler!

The contest was definitely one of the most challenging either of us had ever attempted. Using high-quality parts and carefully thinking through every step in the designing process, an achievement to be proud of was obtained. As a smoothly operating team, we had managed to build the best container handler.
