SES Standards Engineering
The concept of 'Standardization' was front and center in the SES May/June issue of Standards Engineering, where the use of jazz standards in music was discussed. Jazz standards are foundational pieces of music that are the underpinning of all future works. We also learned that jazz music has its own vocabulary and means of expression and that becoming a jazz master required that you learn, study, and internalize these concepts.

In standards development, we pursue order, we set the playing field, we establish the rules and in many ways, that pursuit of standardization, makes it easier to expand and grow more quickly. Jazz masters, who had learned the fundamentals, could then expand beyond the jazz standards to create new music.

Today, technological advancement and increased use of the internet has resulted in a new era of growth and just like with Jazz, a baseline set of standards is needed. Artificial intelligence and internet of things are two examples, where the industry has begun to explore the importance of standardization and developing roadmaps to ensure continued and sustained growth.

The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) recently released a draft "Plan for Federal Engagement in Developing Technical Standards and Related Tools” related to artificial intelligence which will be available for public comment until July 19, 2019. Internationally, the European Commission has introduced a European approach to artificial intelligence and robotics. And supporting those efforts are the Standards Development Organizations (SDOs); which are leading the way in developing standards for IoT devices, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity and other important areas of technological development.
