Standards Engineering

The July/August issue of Standards Engineering includes a discussion on new developments in standards publishing and how the industry can become more sophisticated in how they publish and use standards; it’s about standards interoperability, but even more—the next step beyond PDF. Greg Saunders of the US Department of Defense, well known to the standards community, describes the work going on here. This article is followed by a description of the work being done by the Standards Alliance, where ANSI is partnering with government to improve the standards infrastructure around the world. Leslie McDermott of ANSI fills us in.

Read on to find other articles including Jennifer Moyer’s CStd piece on standards for medical device regulation, and a nice piece on how Canada has used a “free trade agreement” and accompanying mechanisms to help solve the different use of standards and regulations across national/territory/province boundaries.

On the member side, the SES recently announced its 2018 scholarship winners, and you can find out about them in this issue. We also have the results of the recent SES election, and are pleased to welcome new board member Andrei Moldoveanu to his role as Technical Council Director overseeing the Standards and Certification Committees.
Interested in adding standards professional certification to your resume and LinkedIn?

We will be glad to help you with the certification process. Certification Committee members will be available at the annual conference in the exhibit hall and in conjunction with the Thursday August 9 Workforce Development seminar to assist individuals with completing their application.  Anyone interested in becoming a certified standards professional can:
  • pick up forms
  • submit the application, tests, or abstracts
  • or just get questions answered
SES Member Spotlight

The Society for Standards Professionals (SES) is seeking SES Member volunteers to discuss how they became a member, what standards development means to them, and how the SES has contributed or played a part in their professional development. Volunteers will be asked to complete a short one page survey and if chosen, will be included in a future SES News posting.

To request a copy of the Member Spotlight Survey, Contract Mike Morrell, SES Executive Director, Mikemorrell@live.com
The SES Standards Committee is developing a revision to the SES 2 standard which provides guidance to standards development organizations, trade associations, government agencies, companies and any others involved in the development of standards. It addresses the essential due process requirements for the development, revision, reaffirmation and withdrawal of standards in the form of a model procedures guide. To find out more, contact SES Executive Director Mike Morrell mikemorrell@live.com
