Big News!
We're very excited to announce that Kawartha Commons is officially registered as an Ontario corporation. That's huge, because now we can purchase a site. And we've hired consultant Katie McCamant of CoHousing Solutions to help us make our project a reality.

Those are two big steps toward building a tightly knit neighbourhood that fosters sharing, connection, and fun!

We've got other things going on too. We may be  working hard, but we still find time to have fun. With the weather getting warmer (isn't it?), we're planning two Summer Socials. Why not join us?

Don't forget - we always welcome new members. Are you looking for a community where you can count on the support and sociability of your neighbours, without giving up your privacy? Come to our next orientation and business meeting to find out more.

Need a reason to join Kawartha Commons? Here are five:
  1. Our members are actively working together to create a cohesive community. Each of us has something to contribute, and we make sure that everyone takes part in building consensus as we make decisions to move our project forward.
  2. Our Discovery Circles are workshops where we learn about building a community. The emphasis is on adopting effective ways to communicate with each other to ensure everyone is heard and feels welcome. Learning sessions are  open to members and non-members alike.
  3. Our operational structure - cohousing takes plenty of work, so it helps to be well-organized. That’s one of the first things that newcomers to Kawartha Commons notice. We have 11 committees, including Finance, and Governance, and they do a great job at making sure we get the details right.
  4. Now that we're incorporated, we expect to find a site soon for our new neighbourhood. There are plenty of locations in Peterborough, and our Site committee is in high gear looking for the right one.
  5. We've retained Katie McCamant of CoHousing Solutions to help us design and build our community. We're in very good hands - she has worked on dozens of projects in North America, and nobody knows more about building healthy, sustainable, and successful cohousing communities.

New to cohousing? Check out this primer compiled by Katie for an excellent overview of basic cohousing concepts. This video tour of three cohousing communities in BC - WindSong,  Cranberry Commons, and Roberts Creek - also offers a look at what makes cohousing a viable and sustainable way of life.

Curious about cohousing? We'd love to tell you more - simply drop us a line at info@kawarthacommons.ca (don't forget to add us to your Contacts) or visit us at kawarthacommons.ca.

We may think that our greatest need is to be loved, but the even deeper, more universal need, is our desire to belong. - Jean Vanier

Kawartha Commons Summer Socials
Summer's coming, and what better place to spend it than in Kawartha? We're planning two Summer Socials - we're all about socializing - and you're invited! Both are potluck dinners, so bring your favourite dish (a card listing the ingredients for those with food sensitivities would be helpful) and beverage of choice.

Come See Cohousing in Action
A great way to find out what makes Kawartha Commons such a vibrant organization is to come to one of our business meetings. Anyone who has already attended an Orientation Session is welcome.

Business meetings are where we make decisions as a group. Each committee is asked to prepare reports a week before the meeting, which are circulated to the entire membership for review.

Everyone is given a chance to be heard, and there are always lively discussions at every meeting. When we’re ready to make a decision, all full members are entitled to vote.

Our next meeting is on Sunday, June 23 at Activity Haven Senior Centre, 180 Barnardo Avenue in Peterborough (enter through the back door). The meeting runs from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. As always, the day ends with a potluck dinner that wraps up at 6:00pm.

For those who haven't yet joined us for an Orientation, our next one will be held before the June 23 Business Meeting at the same location, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm.

If you would like to join us, or need more information, contact us at
membership@kawarthacommons.ca. See you there!
