Assistance Dog Program
Our Assistance Dog program provides and specifically trains dogs to perform tasks for people with disabilities, sometimes visible and sometimes not. These dogs and their handler spend many months, if not years, training together.  We like to highlight graduates and/or milestones that some of our Teams have accomplished during their journeys. If you would like to help support this program, donations are always kindly accepted.

Three of our assistance dog teams recently passed a milestone,
earning their AKC Canine Good Citizen ribbons with great guidance from our Canine Coach Janet.
Congratulations to everyone!

Did you know?

According to the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners (IAADP) guidelines, training an Assistance Dog requires a minimum of 120 hours of training for at least 6 months, depending on the dog and the required skills or task. This is a lot of time and effort that our Coaches provide for the Teams as well as the Teams put into their own training.

"Get Involved” – Therapy Dog Program

Our “Get Involved” pillar includes our Therapy Dog Teams, upcoming events and highlights many of our volunteers that are behind the scenes. Michael’s Angel Paws Therapy Dog Program is a group of dedicated volunteers who consistently travel out into our communities to share the love through “Smiles through Waggin’ Tails”.  They go to hospitals, schools, hospice facilities, and other community providers and events to lend support or just to cheer someone up.

H.O.P.E. Celebration 2021 Wrap up

We all had a blast at The Space with entertainment from Reckless in Vegas and super Comedian Gabe Lopez! Our friends at T.L.C. On-Leashed, a doggy daycare and boarding agency, as well as organic treat designers, were Super Sponsors attending the gala and displaying some of their products. In addition, the Greek Food and Dessert trucks provided excellent food and yummy desserts.

This year’s celebration was a big success for Michael’s Angel Paws.  We earned over $13,000 dollars which beat our record from previous years! We sold over 90 tickets and had countless participates via in-person and virtual take part in our first virtual silent auction raising over $6,000. Thank you to everyone who attended, physically or virtually, and to those who bid on the auction items.  Without your support, Michael’s Angel Paws could not provide all the services to the Las Vegas community that we do.

Pink Scarf Award From our Friends at the Las Vegas Lights FC

Las Vegas Lights Football Club has maintained that, with everything they do, is by Las Vegas, for Las Vegas, and of Las Vegas.
Lights FC will honor members of the Las Vegas community who hold this mission near and dear to their hearts, as well. We will do so with the presentation of The Pink Scarf, honoring these individuals with their scarf during a pregame ceremony at midfield before each match played.
And this month was no different, our very own Mrs. Stephanie Gerken, CEO, and Founder of Michael’s Angel Paws was September’s recipient.  She was the Honouree and was escorted onto the field with some of our wonderful Therapy Teams. Congratulations Steph!

Volunteer in the SPOTlight!

Jazzy has been a volunteer with Michael’s Angel Paws for five years. She often provides her time supporting our Therapy Dog program and, she is an important member of our Michael’s Angel Paws Board of Directors as the Director of Finances. Thank you Jazz for all you do to help this organization. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Therapy Dogs really can bring wellness and joy to others.

Interaction with Therapy Dogs has been shown to reduce blood pressure, provide physical stimulation and assist with pain management for many patients in hospital settings.  Therapy Dogs have also been used in crisis situations to help people calm and soothe themselves, just by petting and receiving some love from a furry friend.  In schools, visiting Therapy Dogs can help promote greater self-esteem when students get to interact and read to a Therapy Dog pup.  These dogs can also assist students with more focused interactions with other students and teachers.

Michael’s Angel Paws is here to provide training to people and their dogs who would like to become Therapy Dog teams and help our community in a variety of ways.  Contact us if interested!

Community Dog Training Program

This program offers our very best in training to the Las Vegas community. Monthly group classes are held at our partner businesses, Dog Supplies Outlet or At Your Service Pet Supplies (in Las Vegas and Henderson).  Or, if you feel your pup would do better with one-on-one training, we also provide private lessons.  We can help your pup to become a well-behaved member of your family! Below is a list of our upcoming classes or call Michael’s Angel Paws directly to set up private lessons.

Michael joined our Team in February of this year. He has been following his passion for the last nine years, studying all aspects of dog training from sport to pet dogs.  He began training his personal dogs to compete in a dog sport called IGP and following this interest in the sport, it led him to study with some of the best dog trainers in the world.  In 2016 he attended the first part of the NePoPo® Dog training school and graduated in 2017, which led him to transition into helping people train their dogs with pet obedience as well as various types of aggression.  Joining Michael's Angel Paws has allowed him to help with our Assistance Dog program which is very important to us and a needed, aspect of dog training. We are extremely fortunate to have a well-rounded professional dog trainer on our Team.
Thank you, Michael, your contributions are well recognized!

How to teach your dog to “Sit”

Get your dog’s attention so they know you have a treat. Hold the treat up in front of your dog’s nose, just above head height.  Move the treat towards your dog, and slowly over towards the back of their head. Your dog should naturally want to follow the treat with his/her eyes and nose and will end up sitting down to do this. Don’t move the treat back so fast so he/she spins around to get at the treat. As soon as your dog’s behind touches the ground, immediately say “Good” in an upbeat, enthusiastic tone and then give your pup their treat.

Hi,

This month marks Michael’s 10th Angel anniversary.  It’s a huge milestone as this year more than any other year I wondered what would be his favorite sport, what would be his favorite toy, his favorite movie, favorite character and so many other things that I cried wondering about all the what-ifs of life.  But, we can’t live by the what-ifs of life so I wiped the tears away.   Bryce and I looked back over what has happened from the "Smiles through Waggin' Tails" concept through our Therapy Dog program that has brought hours of joy to others in their darkest days.  Also, many dogs have been saved through our community dog program, transforming street pups into loving family members that have thrived.  In addition to this, our Assistance Dog program has graduated over 120 teams over the last ten years.

What began as a way to heal has grown into an organization creating HOPE!  I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued support and love.

This has been a month of celebration - from being selected as a Pink Scarf recipient from LV Lights to our annual fundraiser, the H.O.P.E. Celebration.  The Pink Scarf highlights organizations that have had an impact on our local community.  Our H.O.P.E. Celebration 2021 was an evening full of laughter and we raised just over $13k.

With love,
Steph
