Adventures of Mika
Service Dog in Training
January 25th makes one year since this fluff ball came to us from Mt. Charleston. Mika is now 15 months old! She still has puppy energy and is yet to realize her size. She loves to snuggle and give love. She will lean all the way into you and cover you with kisses.
She recently started Rally class. She’s a pro at “front”, “heel”, “side” and “around”. She loves chasing her ball and recently had that skill transferred to a cane. It didn’t take long for this smart girl to learn to fetch the cane when we dropped it.
When Mika has her vest on and is “working,” she is almost perfect. She instinctively blocks and covers. She is always on alert and keeping her eye on her surroundings. She doesn’t show much interest in people or food, and tends to ignore things on the ground. Except birds. Being raised with a beagle has given her strong “bird dog” reactions. They are flying toys that should be caught, quickly.
In the past year she has gone from fighting bath time to accepting her soapy fate, knowing that her favorite part, drying off, will happen once she gets through the bath. She loves her spa days. She lets us check her from ear to tail without complaint. Nail trims and teeth brushing makes all the girls very happy. They line up and can even get a little pushy to take their turn.
Mika still carries a toy outside with her at potty time and will often drop it. That means we have a lot of toys piled up and they get washed before they can come back into the rotation.
We have had a lot of visitors lately. She has improved greatly with having guests and meeting new people. Mika makes sure they know it’s her house and insists on showing off her impressive spin moves before she covers guests with love and hair.
We cannot believe it has been a year already. Time flies when you are having fun! Mika is an amazing, smart, silly, lovable girl. Raising her has been a pleasure and an honor. We are excited for what is next to come.
