COVID-19 updates
Easing of lockdown restrictions postponed

Further easing of coronavirus restrictions due to come in to force from 1 August have been postponed for at least two weeks, amid concerns over an increase in cases.

This includes the reopening of leisure businesses such as bowling alleys, casinos and allowing beauty salons to carry out close-up treatments, as well as the reversal of the decision to allow weddings to have up to 30 guests. Face masks will also be mandatory in more indoor settings.

The statement also confirmed a pause to shielding would continue from 1 August.

Face coverings mandatory in indoor settings

The requirement to wear a face covering will shortly be extended to include spaces where you are likely to come in to contact with people you do not normally meet, such as museums, galleries, cinemas and places of worship. This will become enforceable in law from 8 August.

Since 24 July, face coverings have also been mandatory in shops, supermarkets, shopping centres and enclosed transport hubs. 

The new rules follow the wearing of face masks on public transport and in medical settings, such as hospitals and GP practices.

Some people are exempt from wearing masks, for example children under 11. If this applies to you or your family, exemption badges for your mobile phone or to print can be downloaded here.
Sefton gets first COVID-19 local testing sites

The first ever dedicated walk-through COVID-19 testing sites in Cheshire and Merseyside are to be deployed in Sefton.

The semi-permanent sites, known as local testing sites (LTS), are being created in both Bootle and Southport, with the first of these going live from Friday 31 July in Bootle.

The new testing sites are in addition to the mobile testing units which will continue to operate in Sefton throughout August.

Mental health apps to support children and young people 

There are a number of useful digital tools to support children, young people and adults who are experiencing increased mental health needs as a result of COVID-19. All 10-18 year olds can now download the ThinkNinja app free of charge until the end of September. You can also explore a range of over 20 existing apps approved on the NHS Apps library here.

Advice and support for financial uncertainty

Many people may be experiencing financial worries or difficulties as a result of the pandemic. You can get help from Citizens Advice on claiming universal credit as well as figuring out how to cope in changing circumstance - more information can be found here

Sefton Council health and wellbeing directory 

Sefton Council’s support services are still operating even if the way they do so may have changed. The council website now has a health and wellbeing directory which gives you more information on local, regional and national support, including weight management support, stop smoking support, drug and alcohol services, sexual health services and information on safe and healthy relationships. More information can be found on all these services and how to contact them here.
Latest news

Successful funding bid for Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) in Sefton

NHS South Sefton and NHS Southport and Formby CCGs in partnership with Sefton Council, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, North West Boroughs Healthcare, schools, voluntary community and faith (VCF) sector colleagues have been successful in a bid to provide additional early mental health support for children and young people in the borough.
 
The NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE/I) bid secured £720k of funding to set up two Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) in Sefton, scheduled to be established by the beginning of 2021 as part of wave 4 of the national roll out of the teams. MHSTs are part of the system-wide local transformation plan for children and young people’s mental health, working in schools and colleges to deliver early intervention for mild to moderate mental health issues and building on the support already available in schools, from local health and care services and VCF organisations.

New urgent eye care service launches in Sefton

A new service offering telephone and video consultations is now providing urgent eye care for people across Sefton.

The urgent eyecare service (CUES) has been put in place to ensure borough residents have quick and easy access to optical care during the pandemic through the use of online and remote technology.

South Sefton patients positive about GPs

Results from the latest national GP Patient Survey published by NHS England show that patients in south Sefton overall are positive about the care they receive from their GP practice.

This survey provides insight into patients’ experiences of general practice in the period prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Headline findings in the area are all above the national average:

  • 87% of patients said that in their last appointment they felt that the healthcare professional recognised and/or understood any mental health needs that they might have had
  • 83% of patients would describe their experience of their GP practice as ‘good’
  • 78% of patients felt that over the past 12 months they had enough support from local services and organisations to help manage conditions
  • When asked how helpful patients found the receptionist at their GP practice 90% of patients said they were helpful.

New telephone booking line at Litherland Walk-in Centre

To support and maintain safe and effective delivery of care, Litherland Walk-in Centre is now operating a telephone triage and appointment system. Patients can now book an appointment by contacting the centre direct on a new number which is: 0151 475 4667. Read more here.

Better Health - live a healthier life and reduce risk of serious illness

Public Health England has launched a new health campaign to support people to live healthier lives and reduce risk of serious illness, including COVID-19.

Gaining weight is often a gradual process - it happens over the years as a result of modern-day life and the odd unhealthy habit. Extra weight causes fat to build up around vital organs, making it harder for the body to fight against diseases like cancer, heart disease and now COVID-19.

Public Health England’s Better Health campaign will provide a variety of tools and apps to help you make healthier food choices, become more active and prevent future weight gain. One of these tools is a Weight Loss Plan app, which provides 12 weeks’ worth of engaging content that can be personalised and tailored to the goals and needs of the individual. Residents are urged to stay alert and safe this Eid while attending prayers and spending time celebrating with family and friends.

It is important that you continue to keep your distance from those people you don’t live with and wash your hands more frequently for at least 20 seconds during the day.

New ways to give feedback on North West Ambulance Services to help shape services

North West Ambulance has launched three new ongoing surveys, to make it easier for people to routinely share their experience of the trust’s services. The trust is encouraging anyone who has recently used its services to provide feedback, to find out what it is doing well and where it may be able to improve. You can do this by completing one of its patient surveys. Find out more here.
Have your say in shaping the future of NHS complaint handling

The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has been working with the NHS and other public service organisations, members of the public and advocacy groups to develop a shared vision for NHS complaint handling. This is called the Complaint Standards Framework. Have your say in shaping the future of NHS complaint handling by taking part in the survey here.
CQC and Healthwatch ask for your views during COVID - share feedback on hospital discharge

As part of the #BecauseWeAllCare campaign to encourage everyone to support the NHS post-COVID recovery, Healthwatch Sefton is asking local people to share their experience of care in hospital.
During the coronavirus pandemic the usual discharge processes hospitals follow changed to help free up beds and Healthwatch wants to hear from those who were affected because of these changes to understand how they have affected people’s health and wellbeing – both positively and negatively.

First South Asian Heritage Month
The first ever South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) is taking place 18 July-17 August, with a variety of events taking place online. The aim of SAHM is to raise the profile of British-South Asian history, heritage and identity through education, arts, culture and commemorations across the country.

South Asia is formed of 8 countries, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The British South Asian community is over 3 million people strong, with at least 1 out of every 20 people in this country having South Asian heritage.
