Community COVID-19 vaccination programme in Sefton 

GPs, working together with the CCGs are continuing to roll out the COVID-19 community vaccination programme in Sefton, which began at the end of December.

Over the coming weeks this will gain pace, with more patients most at risk of COVID-19 - aged over 80 years and care home staff and residents - being invited for their immunisation first.

Our GP practices are working together in groups to deliver vaccinations as quickly as possible to their patients aged over 80 years and to invite them into a community centre to be immunised safely.

Importantly, in the meantime we are asking everyone not to contact their GP practice or another NHS organisation to ask for their vaccination – or to request one for a member of their household or their carer. We do understand that people will be keen to know when they will receive their vaccines. Each of us will receive an invite when it is our turn to be vaccinated, either by letter or a phone call.

You may know others aged over 80 who have been invited for their vaccination already, however, not all areas of Sefton could start vaccinating at the same time, so not everyone has been contacted yet, but we will get to you.

This is the biggest vaccination programme the NHS has ever undertaken. It is a huge challenge and we are working hard to overcome any logistical issues as they may arise. So, the exact weekly roll-out of the programme will be largely shaped by the vaccine supply from the manufacturers.

Not all local premises or surgeries can become community vaccination centres, as they need to meet the strict clinical and logistical requirements of the programme. So, when it is your turn to be vaccinated, be prepared that it may not be at your GP practice or other nearby venue. 

The NHS has a clear vaccine delivery plan but it will take some time for GP practices to work through the number of people aged over 80 that need to be contacted. So we are asking everyone to be patient and until people are fully vaccinated with two doses, they are reminded to follow the current restrictions and guidance and play their part by following these steps:

  • Do not contact your GP practice or the NHS to seek a vaccine, we will contact you
  • When we do contact you, please attend your booked appointments
  • Please continue to follow all the guidance to control the virus and save lives by socially distancing, wearing a mask or face covering and washing your hands regularly

The roll out of the programme in community vaccinations centres is in addition to hospital immunisation hubs, which began operating first from 8 December.

National lockdown: Stay at home

The Prime Minister has announced a national lockdown and instructed people to stay at home to control the virus, protect the NHS and save lives.

You must not leave, or be outside of your home except where necessary. You may leave home to:

  • shop for basic necessities, for you or a vulnerable person
  • go to work, or provide voluntary or charitable services, if you cannot reasonably do so from home
  • exercise with your household (or support bubble) or one other person, this should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area.
  • meet your support bubble or childcare bubble where necessary, but only if you are legally permitted to form one
  • seek medical assistance or avoid injury, illness or risk of harm (including domestic abuse)
  • attend education or childcare - for those eligible

Advice for people at higher risk 

If you are clinically vulnerable, you could be at higher risk of severe illness from coronavirus. There is additional advice for people who are clinically extremely vulnerable to coronavirus. Those who are clinically extremely vulnerable should follow resumed shielding guidance and should not attend work, school, college or university. You should limit the time you spend outside the home. You should only go out for medical appointments, exercise or if it is essential.

Take steps towards a healthier 2021

With the vaccine rollout underway, we have reason to be hopeful for 2021. By making some small changes, you can get the New Year off to a healthier start and take control of your wellbeing. 

Dr Rob Caudwell, chair of NHS Southport and Formby Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Making changes to your lifestyle can not only help improve your physical and mental health, but it can also help protect you from becoming seriously unwell with COVID-19. Consider taking a Vitamin D supplement during the winter months, as it is difficult to get enough of that during the shorter daylight hours. Vitamin D helps to control the amount of calcium and phosphate in our bodies – needed for healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. Eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, combined with getting active and staying connected with people can all help to improve your health – both physically and mentally.”

CCG announces new NHS community services provider

NHS Southport and Formby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has announced that from May 2021, Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust will be the new provider of community health services for its residents following a rigorous re-procurement process.

Community health services is the collective name for a wide range of care, including blood testing, district nursing, falls prevention and diabetes care and education. Read more here.
New talking therapies provider launches service to support thousands across Sefton

Mental Health Matters (MHM) has launched Talking Matters Sefton.

Developed in partnership with NHS Southport and Formby and NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Groups, the service ensures that patients can continue to access high-quality talking therapies as conveniently as possible, which is more important than ever in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and its impact on mental wellbeing.

Talking Matters Sefton (TMS) is designed to help anyone aged over 16 in the borough, to deal with common mental health difficulties. These may include depression, anxiety, panic, phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or post-traumatic stress disorder. Read more here.

New Year honour for Sefton CCGs’ head pharmacist

Susanne Lynch, head of medicines management for both clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in Sefton has been recognised in the Queen's New Year honours list with an MBE - a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

The honour recognises the Formby resident’s services to pharmacy, including her work responding to the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen Susanne and her team providing additional direct support to some of the borough’s most vulnerable patients. Read more here.
