March Highlight | Wisconsin Runner's Study

In 2016, at the national physical therapy meeting, a group of our physical therapists met with PT researchers Bryan Heiderscheidt and Evan Nelson from UW Madison to discuss their current projects and TRIA’s research aspirations for our running program. The high volume of runners we treat here along with the strong research infrastructure were attractive qualities to our colleagues from UW Madison and they invited us to participate in their multi-center study.
Running research is about so much more than just the biomedical model of injuries. The mental and physical effects following injuries is a focus in the return to sport literature. Our TRIA team decided that we’d like to focus our first running research project on this very topic. UW Madison allowed us to add additional questions to their study for our patients to answer. This would let us further study if the magnitude of psychological distress influences functional outcomes in injured runners.
This past January, preliminary results of our data were disseminated at the national physical therapy meeting. The data shows that a large percentage of injured runners have a high degree of anxiety and that fear is associated with a lower ability to run. We are in the final stages of data collection and are excite to analyze our final results as we work towards publication later this year. It is our vision that the results of this study will drive treatment of injured runners to be more individuated using a broader biopsychosocial model.

Staff Feature | Ben Maschke, PT, DPT, OCS

This month we would like to highlight our Physical Therapy Supervisor Ben Maschke. He has been a physical therapist at TRIA Bloomington for almost 11 years, and has had the exciting opportunity to see our organization successfully grow and mature. Ben specializes in treating injured runners and enjoys seeing other complex orthopedic cases. He also supervises physical therapists at our Bloomington location and enjoys getting his feet wet with some research. He is very thankful for the support the team has from the TRIA Institute, our administration, and the mentorship from our research scientist Terri Chmiewlewski. Without this support, projects like the one detailed in the highlight above would be extremely difficult to complete. Ben says when not at work, he stays grounded by being active outdoors and spending time with his wife and two daughters.

Here are a few questions we asked to get to know him.
