OBA Weekly Newsletter - Issue 81 - 13th October 2016

Issue 81 - 13th October 2016
Dear families and friends of OBA,

Following the huge success of our Year 6 Open Evening, we have our Sixth Form Open Evening this Thursday from 6 to 8.30pm. Even if you or your child is in Year 11 here already, I encourage you to come along so you can get a real flavour of what life as in our Sixth Form is really like.  You will find out about more than forty courses that you could undertake here with us, as well as seeing our fantastic facilities.

If you are the parent of a Year 6 student who may have missed our Open Evening then please contact Mrs Snagg, our Leader of Transition, to organise a tour of the Academy:

The final week of half-term sees a first cohort of our Year 10 students going out to take up a work experience placement with Saint Gobain Isover, our new ‘Business in the community’ initiative partners.  This will give them a valuable insight into the world of work and supply them with some great skills for future life.  The majority of Year 10 students will get this wonderful opportunity over the course of the year.

Best wishes

Mr. M Wyss
Academy Principal

Boy Band, Mr Meanor, visit OBA

Year 8 students were thrilled last week to experience a musical treat when they were invited to a performance by up and coming boy band, ‘Mr Meanor’.

The boys are linked to the #thinkaboutit campaign, one of programmes headed by the Peace Centre Foundation in Warrington which supports young people to think critically about current affairs.

#thinkaboutit is led by the pop group ‘Mr Meanor’, a three-piece band including Marcel from Los Angeles and Jake and Jordan from Essex.

The day after the attacks on Paris (November 2015), the band were in the studio and felt so emotionally traumatised that they wrote a song.  The band decided to donate the single’s proceeds to the Peace Centre Foundation, and together the band and Foundation decided to create a campaign.  The aim is simple; to allow an influential young set of artists to talk sing to young people and to promote key messages aligned to Foundation projects.

High School Catering Team of The Year

Many congratulations go to OBA’s catering staff for winning THE HIGH SCHOOL CATERING TEAM OF THE YEAR in Halton. Our catering staff are already very proud of the gold standard that they provide and everyone in OBA feels that this reward is truly deserved. The poem below sums up why they were singled out for being the best.

Outstanding, Brilliant & Amazing
Thanks you ladies for all that you do,
It’s really quite simple, for just being you.
The food you create, yes, each single bite,
Is always a treat, a delicious delight.
From baguettes to pasta, roast dinners you make,
The cookies, fruit salad and special traybake
Your teamwork, your humour and all that we munch,
Is something that makes you a brilliant bunch.
So thank-you for cooking our daily school dinners,
You really deserve to be OBA WINNERS!

LAMDA Examination Success

For the second year running!

The Drama department has recently received the eagerly anticipated examination results for seventeen students who took part in prestigious LAMDA Acting examinations.

It is a delight to announce, for the second year in a row that The Drama Department has achieved 100% pass rate with students from Years 7-11 achieving passes with merits and distinctions.

This includes our current Year 11 Head Girl, Emily Willcott and Head Boy, Connor Murphy achieving their Grade 6 Bronze Medal which they are wearing on the lapel of their blazers with pride!

Furthermore two Year 9 Drama students Lauren O’Neill and Lauren Fisher surpassed all expectations and achieved a distinction mark in their very first LAMDA examination.

Miss McKevitt, LAMDA Centre Co-ordinator said:

All pupils worked tirelessly on the lead up to the examination, staying behind after school and rehearsing until their examination pieces were of a high standard and this clearly paid off! I am so proud and thrilled for each and every pupil! Well done to you all!

Congratulations and a massive well done to all students who took part!

If you are interested in any LAMDA Acting examinations please contact Miss Mc Kevitt (Drama Teacher & LAMDA Centre Co-ordinator) at or alternatively contact the academy on 01928 711643.

Geography Postcard Design

Congratulations to Layla Carson in Year 7 who won Mr Chiles' Head of Geography postcard award.  Mr Chiles was delighted with the range of ideas in the entries submitted by the Year 7s who have settled in well and are enjoying their Geography lessons.

Isover Saint Gobain’s Launch Day at OBA

Following on from last week’s report on OBA’s links with Isover Saint Gobain, we have had more news about the Launch Day which will take place on Thursday 20th October.

OBA will host the launch event which will include an in depth overview of the company Saint Gobain, its history, the industry as a whole and job sectors across the business.

The day will include an assembly and five Careers and Raising Aspirations workshops hosted by Saint Gobain and OBA’s teachers.

During this time the students will learn about job opportunities overseas and how to market, prepare and understand branding. They will also discuss how to prepare for interviews and will practise the communication skills needed to present yourself confidently in the workplace. In addition, students will consider the importance of social media in the workplace and in securing employment.  They will also learn about the importance of innovation, change and moving forward with the times, as well as understand the importance of sustainability and the environment.

So watch this space for more information on this fabulous link that OBA now has with a very forward-looking local company.

Year 7 Football Victory

After the victorious start to the year for both the Year 8s and the Key Stage 4 football teams recently, the Year 7s in their first game of the season against St Chad’s had a lot to live up to.

Owen Cushion captained the team and twenty-one players were taken to the match! All players performed brilliantly and a special mention must go to Zac Comer who was Man of The Match.

Some fantastic goals were scored by Owen Cushion, Zac Comer, Callum Turrell, Jake hill, Isaac Evans and the team sealed their victory with a 9-4 score at full time.

Manager, Mr Barrett, was very happy with this very promising start and is now looking forward to the season ahead.

Tech Talk

Welcome to Tech Talk @ OBA, the part of our weekly newsletter where we share useful apps, websites and devices.

This week’s Tech Talk is going to focus on a website that can help you easily claim compensation if you have experienced a delayed flight. If you're delayed by more than three hours or your flight is cancelled, under EU rule 261/2004 you are often entitled to between £110 and £510 in compensation – and it's possible to claim this for free. The doors for mass compensation for long flight delays were flung open in October 2012, following a landmark ruling by the European Court of Justice. It clarified that passengers were entitled to compensation for long delays (as long as they met the set criteria) following a challenge by some airlines. The table below shows how much you may be entitled to.

Compensation for delay
Flight distance How late arriving Entitlement
Up to 1,500km (932 miles) More than 3 hours €250
Any flight within the EU over 1,500km (932 miles) or any other flight between 1,500km-3,500 km (2,175 miles) More than 3 hours €400
More than 3,500km (2,175 miles) Between 3-4 hours €300
More than 3,500km (2,175 miles) More than 4 hours €600

Since then, passengers who've been delayed have been fighting to get that compensation and MoneySavingExpert has helped lead the charge. Over 480,000 people have downloaded the free flight delay reclaiming letters – and the website now has a free online reclaim tool to make the process even easier. This is a step-by-step guide to claiming, including our new, free online tool to help draft and manage your complaint (plus free template letters if you want to do it yourself), how to stop the airlines getting out of paying and the latest on the court cases surrounding claims.

Run by consumer champion Martin Lewis, the site is cost free and very easy to use. Go to to find out more.
