Our mission is to promote, maintain, and enhance Oakland's wildland parks and trails.
August 18, 2016

Hello from Oakland parks! In this issue: free hiking tours, upcoming screenings of TRAILHEAD, Oakland Volunteer Park Patrol, and more.

Join us on Labor Day for a free hiking tour

On Monday, September 5, we'll lead a 5.5-mile hike from the Dimond District up to the Chabot Space & Science Center. Hiking tours are free, courtesy of Oakland Volunteer Park Patrol. For all the details and to register (required), please click HERE.

On a Monday in July, we led more than 40 hikers on three separate 3.5-mile hikes

We're working hard to keep our trails open and safe

We've cleared fallen trees and overgrowth, repaired and installed trail markers, cleaned up graffiti, and provided leadership for long-term trail improvement projects. With essentially no city staff assigned to maintain the wildland trail system in Dimond Canyon and Joaquin Miller Park, our collaborations with the Bicycle Trails Council, Friends of Sausal Creek, and Friends of Joaquin Miller Park are incredibly important. Visit "Stewardship" at OaklandTrails.org to learn more and get involved.

Join us! Oakland Volunteer Park Patrol

Since June, we've already logged more than 300 hours handing out maps, giving trail advice, and connecting visitors to park programs and services. Park Patrol volunteers are also given special training to report maintenance issues to Public Works, and to assist first responders during an emergency.

There are two upcoming training sessions, both held at the Joaquin Miller Park Ranger Station:
  • Saturday, August 20, 1pm–4pm
  • Thursday, August 25, 4pm–7pm
Park Patrol volunteers must complete one training course. For more information, and to register for a class, please visit OaklandTrails.org/Park-Patrol

Experience TRAILHEAD on the big screen

There are several upcoming screenings throughout the East Bay. Join us at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience in Walnut Creek, the California Independent Film Festival in Moraga, and twice at the New Parkway Theater during their "Oakland Week". We've also been invited back to REI in Berkeley to show the documentary and give a presentation about Oakland parks. Visit our homepage at OaklandTrails.org for all the details and links for tickets (many events are free).

You may also stream the film online at OaklandTrails.org/Watch, or with Spanish subtitles at OaklandTrails.org/Ver. If you love it, please share it!

Thank you to our sponsors!

The funding for our work is dependent on tax-deductible contributions, and every little bit helps. And while we're thankful for every donor, we'd like to give special thanks to the following major sponsors. By supporting them, you're supporting us.
  • Downtown Subaru of Oakland - Since we launched OaklandTrails.org in December, 2014, Downtown Subaru of Oakland continues to be our most generous supporter.
  • Oaktoberfest in the Dimond - Join us this year on Saturday, October 1 in the Dimond District to support the family-friendly event that contributes year-round to our organization and many others.
  • Copy USA - Whether we need brochures, flyers, or full color TRAILHEAD event posters, Kola refuses to take money from us...thank you for your support!
With their generous contributions and yours, our all-volunteer organization will continue working to promote, maintain, and enhance Oakland's wildland parks and trails.

A fond farewell to Nayeli Maxson

Representing our Vice Mayor and District 4 Councilmember Annie Campbell Washington since she took office, Nayeli has been a regular and positive fixture at just about every District 4 community meeting and event I've attended. She's kept us informed about citywide issues, and has assisted us on countless projects.

I'd like to thank her especially for her work on Oakland Volunteer Park Patrol. As my program development partner, she helped navigate the City, and organized the engagement of a dozen stakeholder organizations, all necessary in creating this important new program.

We wish you the best in your exciting new endeavors, Nayeli, and hope we'll see you often on the trails!

Doing what we love

Year-to-date, we've logged 915 volunteer hours in (and for) Oakland's wildland parks. Thank you for your continued support!

See you on the trails,

Stan Dodson
