Our mission is to promote, maintain, and enhance Oakland's wildland parks and trails.
May 11, 2017

Hello from Oakland Trails!

It may be spring, but what a winter! The trails took a beating with all the rain and wind earlier this year, and we're just now catching up with all the trail repairs. Here's a summary of what we've accomplished in Joaquin Miller, Dimond Canyon, and Leona Heights since January 1, 2017:
  • Cleared 164 fallen trees
  • Improved drainage on over 8 miles of trails
  • Cleaned out 7 large mud bogs on major trail routes
  • Repaired 3 landslides
  • Rerouted the dangerous creek crossing on lower Palos Colorados Trail
  • Kept the culverts clear on the Bridgeview Trail
  • Stabilized the banks of upper Fern Ravine Creek
With special thanks to the Bicycle Trails Council for their partnership in trail maintenance, Oakland Trails volunteers also collaborated with Oakland Public Works, the Friends of Sausal Creek, and the Friends of Joaquin Miller Park, leading work to maintain and enhance the trail system for all park users.

What's to come? We plan to extend the fence on Fern Ravine Trail (to protect the redwood understory), repair sections of tread on upper Sunset Trail, continue our graffiti removal blitz, and we'll be helping out with an Eagle Scout project to improve Orchard Trail.

We are an all-volunteer organization, but tax-deductible donations help us procure needed tools and materials for our work in Oakland parks. With donation levels as low as $10, every little bit helps. Please donate HERE.

Free Hiking Tour on Memorial Day
Join us on a hike on Monday, May 29, from Oakland's Dimond District up to Joaquin Miller Park, where we'll catch AC Transit Line 339 for a ten-minute bus ride back down to Dimond. The full hike will be approximately seven miles, but there will be opportunities to catch earlier buses at miles four and five. Click here here for all the details and to register.
Our tour route will pass through Lookout Point

Thanks to Mayor Libby Schaaf
It's important for our City leaders to have an understanding of the activities in which volunteers are engaged. Thanks, Mayor Schaaf, for giving me the opportunity to give you an update, and advocate for park stewards.

The Anne Woodell Community Award
On the evening of May 4th, at the Oakland Parks & Recreation Foundation's "Taste of Spring" gala, I was a recipient of the Anne Woodell Community Award. While I'm proud to be presented with the Foundation's highest honor for community service in Oakland parks, really it gave me a chance to recognize my many supporters, including collaborating nonprofits, the local business community, Oakland residents, and City electeds and staff. I share this award with all of you.
Doing what we love
Year-to-date, we've logged 1,077 volunteer hours in (and for) Oakland's wildland parks.

See you on the trails,
