Our mission is to promote, maintain, and enhance Oakland's wildland parks and trails.
July 21, 2016
We've had a fun and productive month in Oakland's wildland parks. On the Fourth of July, we led more than 30 hikers from Dimond Park to the Chabot Space & Science Center. Joining us on the hike was special guest and geologist, Andrew Alden. Like many scientific descriptions with evidence dating back 8 million years, the information he provided about our local rocks was fascinating and mind boggling.
To learn about upcoming hiking tours – including a day full of 3-mile hikes geared towards youth and active seniors – visit OaklandTrails.org/hiking-tours.
We've also established Oakland Volunteer Park Patrol. Since late June, Park Patrol volunteers have already logged more than 200 hours welcoming and assisting park users. If you'd like to learn more about this exciting new stewardship opportunity, please visit OaklandTrails.org/Park-Patrol for the full program description.
In other news, our 20-minute documentary TRAILHEAD continues to tour the Bay Area. We've been invited to upcoming film festivals and other events in Berkeley, San Francisco, Lafayette, Walnut Creek, and at The New Parkway Theater in Oakland. We've also released a version of the film with Spanish subtitles, and hope to present a bilingual event in Oakland's Fruitvale District this Fall. For a listing of all scheduled screenings, and to access both versions of the film online, visit our homepage at OaklandTrails.org.
Announcing a Special Sponsorship Opportunity
OaklandTrails.org would like to donate 200 copies of TRAILHEAD to local schools, public libraries, and recreation centersin your name. This $1000 donation level is tax-deductible, will further access of the film to the broad community, and will support our continued work in Oakland's wildland parks. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Call for Park Patrol Volunteers
We are proud to announce the launch of Oakland Volunteer Park Patrol and encourage your participation!
The mission of Oakland Volunteer Park Patrol is to improve the quality and safety of City parks. Park Patrol participants are given special training to assist park users, support emergency responders, and report park issues to the proper City of Oakland agencies.
Volunteers in the Park Patrol program walk, jog, or ride through designated parks and trails monitoring park use and condition. There are no schedules or required shifts. We envision regular park users integrating Park Patrol into their normal recreation routine.
We're Working Hard to Keep Our Trails Open and Safe
Since January, we've cleared 54 fallen trees from trails in Dimond Canyon and Joaquin Miller Park. We do this work independently, and also in collaboration with the Bicycle Trails Council and Oakland Public Works.
Recently, we installed new steps on Fern Ravine Trail, phase one of three for improvements on that trail. Special thanks to the Bairds for their help with this project!
We also cleaned graffiti from more than a dozen trail markers in Joaquin Miller Park.
