Budget Votes TOMORROW! Pack City Hall to Stop the Sweeps

Wednesday, 11/15 @ 9:00AM

Seattle City Hall (600 Fourth Ave)

Sisters and Brothers,

Thank you to all the incredible activists and organizations who have made enormous sacrifices over the last several weeks to attend meetings, hearings, rallies, and even an all-night campout in City Hall to demand Councilmembers vote in the budget to Stop the Sweeps and pass the HOMES Tax.

Now we need to pack City Hall 9:00AM tomorrow to fight for the Stop the Sweeps proviso!

Today, Councilmembers Harrell, Johnson, Juarez, González, and Bagshaw all voted against the HOMES Tax, a small tax on the largest 5% of businesses to raise $25 million each year to build affordable housing and provide basic services and shelter to the houseless community. The double-speak and mental acrobatics by Councilmembers to justify defeating this modest tax on Seattle’s wealthiest corporations to begin addressing the worst homelessness and affordable housing crisis in our city’s history was truly a sight to behold.

At the same time, our movement has clearly pushed back against corporate politics! Because of the movement, each Councilmember who voted ‘NO’ today felt forced to make verbal promises to pass the tax in the next few months. To hold them to their promises, I will bring forward a resolution on Monday at full council, that will put in writing a pledge by the Council to pass the tax on big business within the next three months.

But our work this week is not done yet! Just like we succeeded in putting pressure on the Council today, join me and activists tomorrow at 9:00AM when the Council will vote on the budget amendment to Stop the Sweeps of unauthorized homeless encampments.
