Sisters and Brothers,

Rents are out of control in Seattle, leading to a serious spike in homelessness. In the midst of this crisis, the political establishment of this city is cutting funding to desperately needed homeless shelters and services. Programs providing a lifeline for homeless women were cut recently under Mayor Burgess, resulting in the loss of 249 shelter beds this year already. Following community outrage, incoming Mayor Durkan temporarily restored funding for a few months. But the cuts have not been reversed, and are being justified in the name of a strategic shift towards permanent housing.

Join me on Monday, February 12 at 6:00 PM at City Hall for a City Council meeting to discuss the cuts to women’s shelters and homeless services and build a movement to fully restore this critical funding. Please also share the FB event with your network!

My office believes that access to quality affordable housing is a human right. However, it is disingenuous for corporate politicians to be eliminating shelter access, while at the same time failing to urgently tax big business to raise progressive revenues to fund thousands of publicly-owned permanent affordable housing units every year.

We need to have continual funding for shelters while we simultaneously fight for affordable housing, rent control, and other measures to keep people from becoming homeless in the first place.

Along with activists from SHARE-WHEEL, Housing For All, and Socialist Alternative, I will be putting forward a midyear budget amendment to restore the funding to these essential services, but we need your help to win this. The protests against the original cuts won us a few months of breathing space. Let us now fight for and win the rest!
