Tenants' Rights Vote TOMORROW
Tuesday, November 22, 11 AM, City Hall

Come tell Council:

"Tenants Can't Wait!"
"No Loopholes! Six-Month Payment Plan!"
"We Need to Limit Move-In Fees Now!"

In a recent survey, the Washington Community Action Network found exorbitant move-in fees to be one of the biggest barriers to Seattle's renters. At my request, City staff put together a bill that will give tenants a better chance at securing housing. The legislation limits security deposits and non-refundable fees, and requires landlords to give tenants the option of a six month move-in fees payment plan. This bill is long overdue, and it's a no-brainier.

On September 27, this bill unanimously passed through committee with a 5-0 vote. Unsurprisingly, the conservative Washington Multi-Family Housing Association and Rental Housing Association of Washington (RHAWA), who lobby on behalf of landlords, convinced councilmembers to delay the final vote. Councilmembers have sent it back to committee, to have one more chance to water it down.

It's coming up for a vote TOMORROW, Tuesday, November 22, 11 AM, at City Hall. Sign up to speak in public comment! RHAWA is trying to pack the house. We can't let big business dominate the meeting. Join me, alongside tenant activists and organizers, to tell City Council we need to advance this bill with no loopholes!
