End Mass Incarceration! District 3 Town Hall to Discuss LEAD

Join Councilmember Kshama Sawant & the Capitol Hill Community Council to discuss expanding the Law Enforcement-Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program to Capitol Hill.
- We need to address public safety by providing treatment and housing opportunities to those engaged in nonviolent offenses.
- We need an alternative to the failed anti-poor and racist policy of jailing millions of non-violent offenders.

Sisters and brothers,
The systematic jailing of non-violent offenders has embroiled thousands of Seattleites in the criminal justice system, a policy that pushes individuals into a cycle of poverty and crime while failing to make neighborhoods safe. Millions of dollars are spent, lives are ruined, and yet people continue to feel unsafe in their homes and workplaces.
Please join me and the Capitol Hill Community Council on Thursday, April 28th at 7 pm at the Miller Community Center (330 19th Ave E, 98112) to discuss how we can implement the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program in District 3 as a possible alternative to failed “tough on crime” policies.
LEAD allows police officers to connect people who commit certain low-level offenses with housing and social services instead of sending them to jail. It started as a community-based initiative in Belltown and Skyway, and now people around the city are saying that this program has potential and needs to be expanded to their neighborhood. We need policies that are consistent with the reality that crime and public safety issues worsen as a society becomes more deeply unequal, with a tiny minority getting wealthier, and the rest facing increased barriers to living-wage jobs, education, healthcare and social services, and affordable housing.
We want to improve LEAD and expand it into Capitol Hill, the CD, and Seattle as a whole!
Let’s make our neighborhoods safer, and our city more humane,by funding services and opportunities for people, rather than wasting more money on strategies that clearly don’t work and disproportionately impact people of color and those without money. I hope to see you at this important community meeting!
