Amazing accomplishments at the CHS District Greater DC Event on March 10 - 11.

[A message from Senior Mentor John Ballou]

Team 1418 had another terrific competition this weekend at Hayfield Secondary School where 38 teams competed at the Chesapeake District Greater DC Event. We played twelve qualification matches and were ranked 8 with a record of 11-5-0. We were picked by the captain of the number 2 alliance and made it to the semifinals. Our record does not do justice to the quality of our play, nor gives an idea of how hard-fought some of these matches became, or to what extent our team contributed to the success of each match.  Qualification matches randomly assign you to other teams, sometimes strong teams, sometimes not.  We were able to add significantly to each alliance's scoring in every match we played. You can see details of our stats at

At the award ceremony after the competition, we won the Innovation in Control Award sponsored by Rockwell Automation which celebrates an innovative control system or application of control components to provide unique machine functions. We have won this award several times in the past and continue to display some of the best programming skills in our district.

The judges wrote:

"This team's ability to dynamically balance their robot kept them powered up all weekend (this year's game is called 'Powered Up'). They know time is of the essence, so they used math to scale the robot's input power and a combination of human and machine inputs to map a quick path to success. With their performance dashboard, their shared Python code base, and tablet monitors on their robot, they showed no mercy in vanquishing their foes" (a reference to our slogan 'Vae Victis').

We already acquired 40 district ranking points at last week's event at Battlefield High School and now add to them 47 more points from this week's event, putting us well in the category of qualifying for the district championships at the end of this month. The Chesapeake Championships will be held at the Xfinity center on the campus of the University of Maryland March 28 through the 31st.

Congratulations to all the students on team 1418. Their persistence, attention to detail, their research and their many hours of practice have put them in the top ranks of our district once again. We are an established power in the approximately 140 teams playing in our district. We look forward to testing ourselves against our area's very best in three weeks.
