Sit on a McGill University Committee Next Year!

Have you ever wanted to see how McGill works behind the scenes? Are you passionate about campus issues like student services, academic programs, or equity? Do you have a great idea to improve student life? Then apply to sit as a student representative on a university committee! This is your opportunity to get involved on campus and work with both the McGill administration and SSMU.

The full list of available seats can be found here. Only undergraduate students who are returning to the university for both the Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 semesters are eligible. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 17th at 5:00PM.

Open Letter: McGill Administration Continues to Fail Student Mental Health

The McGill Mental Health Working Group has released an open letter regarding ongoing issues with insufficient and inaccessible mental health services on campus. Major changes introduced this year have not yet addressed chronic issues and have ultimately created more problems than solutions.

They are calling on the McGill administration to take the following actions in order to ensure the wellbeing of our campus community:

  1. Address urgent concerns with Counselling & Mental Health Services;
  2. Keep all dedicated funding in Student Services by eliminating the $650 000 in annual overhead that is deducted from this budget by the administration;
  3. Implement a comprehensive, campus-wide, evidence-based Mental Health Strategy that addresses the spectrum of mental health needs and acknowledges the shared responsibility to create a healthier community.

Provost’s Drop-in Hours

McGill’s Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), Dr. Christopher Manfredi, will be holding drop-in hours at Gert’s Bar this Thursday, April 6th from 4:00-5:00PM. The Provost is responsible for overseeing all academic planning and budgeting at McGill, including all Faculties, equity initiatives, international strategies, student life and much more. Stop by and ask him your questions about the university!

Defer ONE Exam Without Supporting Documentation

Final Exam Deferral Pilot Project

Students will now be granted a first time exam deferral request (e.g. for illness or other extenuating circumstances) without supporting documentation in the following Faculties:

  • Agricultural & Environmental Sciences
  • Arts (including Social Work & Religious Studies)
  • Education
  • Engineering (including Architecture
  • Law
  • Management
  • Science

This policy does not apply to students in Music, Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, or Continuing Studies. Learn more about it here, and don't forget to spread the word.

Addressing Gendered & Sexualized Violence at SSMU

Tuesday, April 11, 6:00-9:00PM, University Centre Rooms 202 & 203

SSMU and the Community Disclosures Network are working to establish improved reporting procedures for students who have experienced sexual violence within a SSMU context. Please join us for an open forum on Tuesday, April 11th, from 6:00-9:00pm in Rooms 202 and 203 of the University Centre to share your feedback.

The Community Disclosures Network is also facilitating focus groups on April 5th & 9th to hear feedback from students who have experienced sexual violence. Sign up here or email community.disclosure.network@gmail.com. Any member of the community can also share feedback anonymously through this form until Friday, April 14th. A report based on these consultations will be released by the end of April.

Royal Victoria Hospital Site: Co-Design Day

Want to contribute to the future of the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) site? McGill University is evaluating the acquisition of this property and will be hosting a “co-design” workshop on Monday, May 8th to reflect on the possible use and identity of the space. The event will include over 70 members of the scientific, social, economic, and cultural communities, as well as student and government representatives. 2017-2018 AVEQ Executive Elections

Nominations for the 2017-2018 AVEQ Executive are now open! The Association for the Voice of Education in Quebec is a provincial student federation responsible for defending the educational, political, social, and economic interests of Quebec students. It works through research, representation, and mobilization activities around the values of democracy, solidarity, and equity. The SSMU is currently an observer union at AVEQ.

Students at any Quebec university are eligible for election to one of the six executive positions. Nominations close this Friday, April 7th at 5:00pm. Learn more here.
