The SSMU Executive has released a statement regarding the shocking events of the past week on both sides of the Canadian border. We are reiterating our support for Muslim students and others who are most affected, including through a donation to the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations (CRARR).
In addition, we have created a list of suggested responses for both individuals and McGill University as a whole. We encourage you to share your feedback with the administration and to take your own action in response to current events.
SSMU coordinates undergraduate representation on nearly 50 university-level committees related to academics, equity, student rights, and more! Most of the groundwork for policy changes and new initiatives at McGill begins on these committees. You can now read the Fall 2016 report from your student representatives and learn more about their projects!
Are you interested in sitting on a McGill committee? Stay tuned for callouts in March!
A survey of existing programs indicates that McGill University provides no dedicated support resources for this population. The report makes clear that much more can be done to promote educational access and success for first generation students and proposes recommendations to improve financial aid, recruitment, peer support, and data collection.
Do you have thoughts about the integration of McGill's wellness services (Counselling, Mental Health, Health Clinic, OSD)? Feedback about recent changes to appointments or policies? Current users of these services are invited to participate in a monthly consultation group regarding past and upcoming projects, including the common intake for psychological services, communications and web presence, renovations to the Brown Building, and new technology updates. Interested students can apply here.
Wednesday, Feb 8th (12:30-2:00 PM) in McLennan MS-74 (lunch provided)
Many students are unaware of how course evaluation results are used and do not take advantage of the opportunity to provide constructive feedback. A special focus of this meeting will be on the possible redevelopment of the Mercury system. McGill Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) would like to hear from you about what you would like to see in a “new and improved” course evaluation system.
Monday, Feb 20th (3:00 PM), University Centre (SSMU Building)
The General Assembly (GA) is a time when YOU can make change at McGill! Members of the SSMU participate in direct democracy in order to shape the priorities of their students' society. Motions for the GA can be submitted up until Feb 7 to the Speaker.
Do you have questions how to submit a Referenda Question or GA motion? Visit www.ssmu.ca/ga or check out the Facebook event for more information.
Submit your nominations and join the selection committee!
