Latest PPL scheme to cut parents’ time with newborns
The ANMF (SA Branch) has condemned the Federal Government’s new Paid Parental Leave (PPL) legislation which will cut new parents’ bonding time with their baby.

“If these changes are passed, they will severely undercut the time many parents get to spend with their newborn – including potentially nearly 13,000 South Australian nurses, midwives and their families.” CEO/Secretary of ANMF (SA Branch) Adj Assoc Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM said.

“For many of them, the time they can afford to spend caring for, and bonding with their own child, will be cut almost in half and this scheme’s small concession of two extra weeks of PPL will be cold comfort.”

“Nurses and midwives work incredibly hard to support South Australian families to stay safe and healthy.  This new PPL legislation threatens one of the few positive workplace policies that help attract and retain good healthcare professionals – and one they rely on to support their families.”

“If the cuts are approved they will give SA nurses no other choice but to return to work when they would advise others to still be exclusively breastfeeding, or face huge financial hardship by taking unpaid leave, or to stop working in our public health system altogether.”

The ANMF (SA Branch) has campaigned extensively for a fair system of PPL. Late last year, it made a submission to the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee investigating the impact of the Federal Government’s previous PPL proposal which also cut access to both employer and Government PPL.

“The Senate Committee is due to report back with its recommendations on February 15, yet the Federal Government has already drafted the new PPL legislation.”

“This new PPL scheme poses the same threat to parents’ precious time with their new baby as the last one and it will hurt South Australian families. We urge Senators to reject it.”  Adj Assoc Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM said.
