Hello travellers,

Double Status credits so I travel with Virgin Australia?

Hello from Byron Bay where I arrive this afternoon, on a Virgin Australia flight. Oh, the irony of travelling on Virgin in a week when Qantas announced its first double status credits promotion for 2020.

Sorry for this newsletter looking like an ad for Qantas, but since general double status promotions have become so rare, this is quite an occasion.

Before you dive into this promotion, look carefully. Just remember that special fare prices have disappeared, and many prices seem to have been hiked, so you will end up paying for those double status credits somehow.

What happened last week?

Aside from the double status promotion, we heard Qantas half-yearly results, which I have yet to trawl through.

The big news is the effect Coronavirus is having on the travel industry and the consequences for the airline industry. Qantas, having slashed its capacity to China including Hong Kong, is now reducing international flights, particularly in Asia, but also across the Tasman, and domestically.

Consumers can only hope that this might end in a bit of a price war, although there is no evidence of that quite yet.

In other news, Singapore Airlines are offering some great 'Spontaneous Escape' fares, Alaska Airlines is slated to join OneWorld, and I reviewed a LATAM domestic flight between Iguazú and Rio de Janeiro.

What's coming up?

I'm in Byron for the week, having a well-earned post-Christmas break. Reports on local wildlife will follow . . .

I have some trips to plan, and some reviews to catch up on.

You can catch up on posts from last week below. Until next week . . .

Happy Travels,

Stephen
