March 2017
Well - there's a bit of news to share!  Not only are we celebrating a fantastic night at the Errols, we're also preparing for auditions for this year's major production, welcoming new committee members and looking forward to a bumper 2017.  Read on...
The Season at Sarsaparilla

Mildred Street, Sarsaparilla, a fictitious outer suburb of Sydney.
Three houses and three backyards, a pregnant wife,
a nosey neighbour and a post office boy in love.

It’s late 1960, it’s summer and the ‘lady dogs’ – as Girlie Pogson so politely refers to them –
in Mildred Street are on heat.
Three families – the Boyles, the Pogsons and the Knotts – eke out a normal existence in this newly-minted, dusty city fringe.

But normalcy belies the secrets and lust, the beauty,
hypocrisy, repression, malevolence and terrible innocence.
And today the apparently mundane will become both hilarious and terrifying.
We are so proud to announce that Three River's major production for 2017 is the powerful, comic and prophetic classic The Season at Sarsaparilla by Australia's only Nobel laureate for Literature, Patrick White.

The season (of "The Season") will run Wed 20 - Sun 24 September at the Earl Arts Centre. So save those dates!

We are delighted to welcome well-known local theatre practitioner, Leigh Oswin as director for this epic, ensemble-driven show.

Audition details are below. This is one of those rare shows that only comes along once in a generation (if that), so you will not want to miss it - either as performer, crew or audience member.  It's sure to be stunning.
Auditions for The Season at Sarsaparilla will be held:

Sat 29 April, 10:00am - 4:30pm
Sun 30 April, 10:00am - 12:30pm
Sat 13 May, 10:00am - 4:30pm
Sun 14 May if required.

Pilgrim Uniting Church Hall,
34 Paterson St, Launceston.

There are fourteen speaking roles available (7F, 7M) and a great range of ages are called for.  All roles are juicy, particularly the the female roles.

To book your audition, contact Stan on 6331 6728 or via email.

The audition pack can downloaded here.
The Errols
Well - Three River had quite the night!

Around twenty Three Riverites, partners and friends were in attendance, to see our production of Twelve Angry Men take home five gongs at the Tasmanian Theatre Awards.

Our winners are:

Best ProductionTwelve Angry Men
Best Direction Stan Gottschalk, Twelve Angry Men
Best EnsembleTwelve Angry Men
Best Performance in a Supporting Role (Male) – Jan Gluszyk, Twelve Angry Men
Best Design (Set/Costumes) – Three River Theatre & Flocky Bock, Twelve Angry Men

It's an amazing reward for the entire company, from those onstage to those behind the scenes to those in the audience.

Also, we were so pleased to celebrate the enormous contribution that Cathy Lawrence makes to our company, by acknowledging her as our "Local Hero" for 2017.  You can read the full text of her nomination in the News section of our website.

Congratulations are also in order for Mudlark Theatre, Encore Theatre, Fawkes Theatre and Stompin - all of which took home well-deserved awards - and also all those productions and companies nominated in the community theatre division, statewide.

Needless to say we are thrilled that the north was well-represented and that our own production was recognised so handsomely.

Here are some pictures from throughout the evening.  We scrubbed up well, for the most part.
Annual General Meeting
Thanks to all who attended the AGM last week.

We welcome a new and returning members, and also a committee with some new faces.

Most notably though, Three River was as pleased as punch to confer upon Rebecca Phillips a Life Membership.  Rebecca has been active with the company since the mid-1980's - as committee member, social organiser and as self-described "Props Queen".  Without Bek's energy, dedication, corporate memory and skill, there is no way Three River would be as successful as it is.  Thank you Rebecca!

This year's incoming committee:
President     Cameron Hindrum
Vice President   vacant
Treasurer and Public Officer   Cathy Lawrence
Secretary     Rebecca Phillips
Committee   Ian Dix
                    Jan Gluszyk
                    Gerard Lane
                    Stuart Loone
                    Pauline Robson
                    Georgie Todman

Incoming president Cameron Hindrum paid tribute to outgoing president Stan Gottschalk for his passion for Three River, and also outgoing committee members Kellie Constable and Beth Geoghegan.

From Cameron: "I am thrilled to be stepping into the role of President for Three River Theatre. I couldn't have picked a better week to do it, with the spectacular success of Twelve Angry Men at the Tasmanian Theatre Awards ringing in our ears.

2017 promises to be another strong year for Three River Theatre, with the continuation of our playreading series at Maggies Cafe (stay tuned for dates!) and our major production for the year, Patrick White's classic 'charade of suburbia in two acts' The Season at Sarsparilla, to be directed by Leigh Oswin and staged at the Earl Arts Centre in September. Hope to see you at the auditions!

Thank you for your continued support and we hope you enjoy what Three River Theatre has to offer over the next twelve months."

And one final thing...
Our friends at Hamley Productions are bringing their show Freud's Last Session to the Earl Arts Centre as part of Theatre North's 2017 Subscription Season.  You can read all about it (and book!) here.  It runs Thu 6 - Sat 8 April.

Featuring Michael Edgar (well-known to Three River audiences) and Chris Hamley (a graduate of UTAS' performing arts course),  Freud's Last Session centers on an imagined meeting between Sigmund Freud and CS Lewis.  Audiences at the Hobart season loved it - and we're sure you will too.

Also, their team are on the lookout for Front of House personnel to assist with the show, and you will get to see the show for free!  If you're interested, contact Kath at
