Have a Healthy & Spooky Halloween!
October 2016                                                                       Volume 6.4

Dear HealthStart Supporter,

Halloween is only days away and the holidays will come on its heels. The holidays are the time of year when it is easy to throw all good health habits out the window and over indulgence in sweet and abundant food.

Kids taught our “Health Education for Youngsters! (HEY!)” Curriculum know they need to feed their entire body every day.  HealthStart kids also know it is okay to indulge in a “treat” once in a while as long as they take care of their nutritional needs so they stay healthy.

Our advice? No trick-or-treater should be prevented from enjoying a little of their Halloween booty or denied pumpkin pie with their Thanksgiving meal.

The trick is to eat healthy first and then only indulge in the sweet stuff in moderation and only eat until you are full – not stuffed.

Happy Healthy Halloween Everyone!

Yours,
Robin Herskowitz

Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips

For young children Halloween night is one of the best of the year, but before you head out consider these trick-or-treating safety tips.
  1. Plan your route in advance
  2. Wear comfortable shoes
  3. Stay well-lit by putting reflective tape on costumes and carrying a flashlight or glowsticks.
  4. Make sure costumes are appropriate length to avoid tripping at night.
  5. Avoid masks to ensure full ability to breathe and see in the dark.
  6. Use flexible props to reduce risk of injury.
  7. Check your children’s candy to ensure that it is in its original wrapper and has not been previously opened.

Hairy Man Spooky Fest

HealthStart staff, interns, and volunteers had a blast at the 22nd annual Brushy Creek Hairy Man Spooky Fest at Cat Hollow Park on Saturday, October 22.

HealthStart ran a booth in the children’s activities area where children "fed" our Monstralia monsters while playing Monstralia Corn Hole Toss and struck a pose at our Yoga Photo booth. You can see pictures of the event HERE.

Funds raised during the event will support our What are YOU Feeding? nutrition education program.

A special thank you goes out to members of the University of Texas chapters of Chi Beta Delta service sorority and Alpha Phi Omega co-ed service fraternity who volunteered at the event. We look forward to working with these great organizations again in the near future!
