Spring into Health 2016                    V5: No. 4

Dear <<First Name>>,
Thanks to supporters like you, during the 2015-2016 school year HealthStart was able to expand its elementary school-based nutrition education program, “What Are YOU Feeding? (WAYF)” to two new elementary schools. This brought the total number of WAYF? schools to three. Want to help us double that number this year?

On Sunday, May 15, Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas presents the 4th Annual I Heart HealthStart Event. Additional sponsors for the event include: DahillLeFleur Transportation, and Superior Healthplan. I would love for you to join us for gourmet nibbles, wine, and a silent auction at a stunning Westlake Hills retreat. Funds raised during the gala will help us to reach our goal of $25,000 and continue expanding our early childhood education programs. By doing so we hope to create a healthier future for an additional 2,000 Central Texas children in 2016-2017.

You can help by purchasing a ticket to our 4th Annual I Heart HealthStart Event, donating an auction item or simply passing the word to your friends and family. We couldn’t do what we do without YOU!

Gratefully yours,
Robin Herskowitz

Spring is here and that means the local farmer markets are in full swing. Benefits to supporting your local farmers market include:
  • Trying new foods from your region in their peak season allowing them to be at their freshest and tastiest, expanding your palate and trying new recipes.
  • Showing support for local businesses and family farmers, keeping money within the local economy.
  • Protecting the environment by limiting the distance and chemicals needed to transport and preserve foods from other parts of the world.
  • Supporting humane treatment of animals, most cheeses, meats, and eggs found in farmers markets are obtained from animals raised without antiobiotics or hormones keeping you and your family healthy.
  • Increasing your connection with your community, strolling the farmers market allows you to meet neighbors and new friends. A lot of farmers markets have activities for children and adults alike introducing them to just how fun and nutritious food can be.
You can find the farmers market closest to you through the National Farmers Market Directory, enter your zip code and see all markets within a selected distance. You are never too far from local, nutritious foods.

YOU AMPLIFIED HSF
Last month, HealthStart supporters helped #amplifyhealthstart with #amplifyatx by raising $4,455 toward expanding our early childhood health education programs.

Online donations and supporter matches from over 30 unique donors helped make this our most successful Amplify Austin Event to date.
North Dallas Expansion
On Saturday, April 2nd HealthStart’s Health Communication VISTA, Erin Damm, joined North Texas Liason, Akina Dimock, at an early childhood conference hosted by Camp Fire First Texas, spreading awareness and excitement for HealthStart’s nutrition education initiatives to over 400 early childhood teachers, administrators and directors in the North Texas area.

The North Texas conference attendees were eager to learn about HealthStart’s mission and programs. In fact Frogstreet. a company dedicated to helping young children learn, invited HealthStart to it's invitation only conference in July in Grapevine Texas. We hope to see you there as create healthier futures for children in North Texas!
