Keep an Attitude for Gratitude
November 2016                                                                       Volume 6.5

Dear HealthStart Supporter,

What are you grateful for? That’s a question we will be asking ourselves, family, and friends come this Thanksgiving Day. I for one am truly grateful for our amazing staff.

Jeremy Follin is our graphic designer extraordinaire. His is the creative hand behind all of HealthStart’s beautiful materials and posts HealthStart produces. Jeremy’s ability to take visualize an idea is one of things that makes HealthStart’s programs standout.

Erin Damm, although not technically staff – she’s our AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, has seemingly endless energy. Her willingness to tackle virtually any task has been more than a blessing. Erin has been a life saver.

I would be remiss if I need note our Board of Directors, committee members, interns and volunteers (you know who you are!). HealthStart exists by the grace of your efforts on our behalf.

Finally, last but certainly not least, I am grateful for each and every one of you who open our newsletter, share our posts, or reach into your pockets to help create a healthier future for our children and communities through early health education, THANK YOU!

May your holiday be filled with food, family and fun!

Gratefully yours,

Robin Herskowitz

Have a Healthy Family Thanksgiving

As you and your family get ready for Thanksgiving this week, keep in mind these helpful tips to get your kids involved, and to ensure you have a fun and healthy holiday.

Involve Kids In Preparing Dinner
  • Help find items on the grocery list
  • Help set the table
  • Wash vegetables and fruits
  • Help measure and mix ingredients
  • Help make fun Thanksgiving decorations
  • Help come up with games or activities for the other kids that may be visiting

Healthy Holiday Habits
  • Don’t forget breakfast!
  • Avoid trying to save your appetite for dinner or you will tend to overeat.
  • Cook with natural ingredients.
  • Cook healthier, low calorie seasonal vegetables such as squash, carrots, turnips, and pumpkins, for a nutrient packed dinner.
  • Serve in smaller serving dishes to encourage smaller portions.
  • Plan for leftovers to reduce the chance of over-eating.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Enjoy desserts however, slice them into thin slices if possible and use nonfat whipped cream.
  • Most importantly, enjoy!

Campfire First Texas:
Children's Health Education Workshops

Thanks to HealthStart's Dallas Liaison, Akina Dimock, and a gift from the Miles Foundation, HealthStart is teaching series of Community Health Education Workshops (CHEWs) at Campfire First in Fort Worth, TX. These workshops show students at the Campfire Early Childhood Development Center all about the way their bodies work and how to keep them healthy. Americorps VISTA, Erin Damm, taught the first round of workshops on Friday, November 4 to a group of 14 students and 2 educators. The students enjoyed learning about their brains and the food/fitness necessary to keep them healthy. They even got to try some brain foods to cement these ideas! Our next workshop will be held on Thursday, December 8 and feature the Bones.

If you are interested in booking a CHEW for your school, community center, or other location please contact us for more information.

Special Thanks: Fit Funds

Thank you so much to St. Helen's Catholic School in Georgetown for selecting HealthStart as the recipient of 10% of funds raised during their Get Fit 4 God Run on Saturday, November 5, 2016. St. Helen's donated $870 to HealthStart's early childhood Health Education Programs. Their generous gift will go toward funding Community Health Workshops (CHEWs) within the Austin Community and beyond.
