Community Partners Keep HealthStart STRONG!
September 2016                                                                       Volume 6.3

Dear HealthStart Supporter,

The need for a more healthful tomorrow is well documented. In 2015, 47% or 149 million Americans had at least one chronic disease. Chronic diseases cause 7 out of 10 adult deaths. Most chronic diseases, thankfully, are preventable.
So how does HealthStart help prevent chronic disease? We do so by building a healthier future for all through children’s early health education and with great partners, of course!
HealthStart’s partners begin with the schools that have embraced our Health Education for Youngsters! (HEY!) Curriculum and “What Are YOU Feeding?” Nutrition program.

This month’s newsletter introduces one of our newest partners, St. Helen Catholic School (see "Support" below). St. Helen selected HealthStart to be a beneficiary of their Get Fit 4 God Run coming up in November. Last Spring Hutto Elementary School chose HealthStart as its beneficiary of its Project-based Learning art initiative.
This past summer HealthStart delivered a series of children’s health workshops in partnership with CommUnityCare Clinics' adult Diabetes Prevention Education program. In addition we have provided children’s health education activities for the City of Austin Office of Sustainability so that parents could participate in focus groups examining Austin’s food system(s).

Healthy School Lunches

Ask any teacher or parent and they'll tell you that children who lack proper nutrition have trouble focusing in school. Medical authorities and nutrition researchers have documented that youngsters who eat nutritious meals every day and lead active lifestyles tend to excel. More importantly, our schools are on the forefront of efforts to improve childhood nutrition, our collective health, and the future of our great nation. Improving the meals that our kids eat in schools is an important step to achieve that goal.

HealthStart strongly believes that what we feed our children for lunch is an important part of their school day. Our What Are YOU Feeding? (WAYF?) cafeteria-based nutrition awareness program focuses on teaching the students about how the food they eat nourishes their bodies.

Additionally, parents can take action and pack their child's lunches. Packing lunches at home allows parents control of what goes into their children's lunch and also gives the warm feeling that comes from knowing the meal was made with love. Run, Have Fun, Raise Funds For Healthy Kids

Austin Gives Miles (AGM) has selected HealthStart as one of its official charity partners for the 2017 NXP Austin Marathon on Sunday, February 19, 2017.

HealthStart is seeking runner-advocates and day-of-race volunteers to support #TeamHealthStart.  All funds raised by our runner-advocates will help build a healthier future for our kids through early, science-based health education. HealthStart sets the foundation for well-being by teaching the youngest among us how to nourish their bodies, what role physical fitness plays in good health, and why caring for one another and taking care of our environment is essential for a healthy community.

Join #TeamHealthStart to help set a foundation for a healthier future by :

  1. REGISTERING TO RUN – Register here. Train for a 5k, half marathon, or full marathon run.
  2. FUNdraising – Become an advocate-runner. Set up a personal fundraising pageCommit to raising at least $300 between now and day of the race day. Win things. The more you raise the cooler the prizes and the better you'll feel about all the good you are doing for yourself and your community!
  3. SHARING –  Let your friends and family know what you are up to. Share our race related posts, emails, and your personal fundraising page with your social media and personal networks.
Aren't a runner? You can still help. Support #TeamHealthStart runners by volunteering the day of the race. Contact HealthStart VISTA Erin Damm about joining #TeamHealthStart or volunteering.
