Hot Summer Days ... and Nights
Photography by: Debbie Jordan
While wandering around Hooper's Island on Maryland's Eastern Shore, I was intrigued by the empty crab baskets stacked on a local work boat at the dock. It was late on a hot summer's day and the glow of the sunset lit up the baskets with a rich golden hue. The boat was worn and the paint was peeling, all a testament to the rugged conditions of life on the water. I could only imagine what was in store for these baskets when the sun rose again.

We often see these baskets photographed overflowing with Maryland Blue Crabs, but rarely are they pictured empty. I love finding a little different angle or an out-of-the-norm approach to taking a photograph in order to convey the feeling of the moment.

Here is a shot hot off the proverbial presses. I haven't even titled it yet. Normally I hate power lines, they are the bane of a landscape photographer. But here I used them as leading lines, along with the road and guard rail, to lead the viewer deeper into the picture. The real reason I like this picture couldn't be captured in a photograph. See that little dark spot on the near power pole in the middle? That is an Osprey nest. An occupied Osprey nest. So as I'm standing there in the pitch darkness, parent and juvenile Osprey are calling down to me. Milky Way and stars blazing over head... and raptors calling. Some pictures just don't do the feelings justice, this being one of them.

I am always asked if the Milky Way looks like this to the naked eye. The answer, sadly, is no. Even in the dark skies of the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, the Milky Way doesn't burn quite this bright. It is there and you can see it, however it looks more like a diffuse cloud that runs the length of they sky. The magic of a camera is that it allows for a longer shot to collect the light and combines it into an image brighter than our own eyes can see.
Path Under the Pier

Sunrise on a summer morning can be magical as the soft colors and hazy skies light up the landscape with a soft pink glow. This image was taken under the pier in Ocean City, Maryland before the tourists hit the beach for the day. The only imprints on the wave-swept sand are two sets of footprints. The O.C. skyline is lit up by the morning glow giving the image an extra pop of color. I love the peaceful, yet desolate feel of the scene.

Summer light lends a natural warmth to an image. The pink glow of summer mornings or the golden hues of mid-day enhance the overall feel of the image, making summer a wonderful time to get out with your camera.
