The Eagle and the Tower
Photography by: Debbie Jordan
Conowingo, MD is known for its Bald Eagle population. Every winter as many as 100 or more eagles gather at the Conowingo Dam along the Susquehanna River to fish the fast moving waters. These magnificent birds of prey and their aerial acrobatics draw photographers from all over to try their hand at capturing that perfect eagle photo. Although I'm still striving for the "perfect image" I often go just for the fun of watching the eagles. The photo above was captured the week after Easter on one such fun trip. The eagle had just swooped down from the trees and snagged a rather large shad, and quickly headed to one of the electrical towers to enjoy his feast. He circled the tower a couple of times evading another eagle who was in hot pursuit hoping to steal the fish, and then finally settled in to dine.

The electrical tower is located on an island in the middle of the Susquehanna River just below the Dam, so no close-up shot this time. Maybe next time the eagle will come to my side of the river.
Nest Material
Photography by: Debbie Jordan
This adult Bald Eagle had just snatched a stick to add to its nest and then soared across the river and headed toward the same tower with its building material. You can clearly see from this photo the large wingspan and beautiful white head and tail feathers. It's easy to see why this beautiful bird is our national symbol.
