CERVANTINO IN GUANAJUATO

CUC - EN LA MUNICIPALIDAD DE IXTAPA

CUC  - Centro Universitario de la Costa is a state college located approximately 30-minutes northeast of centro Vallarta in the municipality of Ixtapa.  The large campus is a beautiful one, with lush green lawns, leafy green trees, palms, palapa-like art studio, long, palm-covered walkway, lovely Peter Gray Art Museum,  artificial lake and enclosed areas for a few crocodiles and turtles.
CAMINANDO A LA CLÍNICA EN CUC
Founded twenty-five years ago, 5,000 students attend CUC.  The walk to the biology building, the furthest one away from the entrance to CUC, takes about 10 minutes.  Volunteers assisted those who needed help carrying kennels.  The clinic took place in a spacious lab room with AC and large windows looking out at green fields.

ALTAVELA, NAYARIT is the first town after turning east at Mezcales, a town halfway to Sayulita to the north.  Altavela ("High Sail" with no sails in sight) is bordered by mango orchards.  The small, clean town consists of block after block of small, one-story cement houses.

CERVANTINO IN GUANAJUATO

GUANAJUATO -  TOP OF THE HIDALGO MARKET - BUILT IN 1910

Guanajuato, capital of the state of Guanajuato, is famous for its splendid colonial architecture, tunnels and silver mines.  At their peak, the mines produced two-thirds of the world´s silver.

GUANAJUATO, GUANAJUATO

Located in central Mexico, Guanajuato sits in a narrow valley at 6,583 feet (2.008 meters).  Many of the city´s main thoroughfares are underground tunnels where a small river once ran.  Streets are often windy and narrow,  many with long sets of stairs that climb up the mountainside. Houses are painted in sherbet pastels, terra cotta and ochre.  The wonderful historic center is filled with small plazas, museums, churches, gorgeous former colonial-era mansions and the beautiful  neo-classical Juárez Theatre, where Caruso once sang.

ATRÁS DE LA PLAZA DE PAZ - LA BASILICA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUANAJUATO (1671-1696)

This was the 47th year for the Cervantino Festival, the largest of its kind in Latin America.  Drawing an estimated 100,000 visitors, it is  performed at approximately 70 different venues.   For eighteen days every October, the festival presents dance recitals, concerts, art, film, lectures and opera from all over the world. This year, it was a Chinese opera performed at the large and attractive convention center.  (I would say most western ears are not attuned for this music).

CALLES  DE GUANAJUATO

This was our third Cervantino.  After a 45-minute flight from Vallarta to Leon and a 40-minute/700 peso taxi ride, we checked into our favorite hotel in Guanajuato - Casa Estrella. (http://www.casaestrellavacationrentals.com/)  Located on the hillside in the Valenciana neighborhood, the charming hotel is very close to where the largest silver vein in Mexico was discovered.  It is a pleasant walk to both la Valenciana foundry and la Valenciana church, also known as the San Cayetano church.  Our bedroom at Casa Estrella was our "room with a view."

IGLESIA LA VALENCIANA - GUANAJUATO -  VISTA DE NUESTRA HABITACIÓN
EN EL HOTEL CASA ESTRELLA

The owner of la Valenciana mine had been so grateful to God for his good fortune, that he commissioned a church to be built (1775-1778) and dedicated it to Saint Cayetano.  A wonderment of
FOUNDRY/FUNDICIÓN - LA VALENCIANA

Mexican Churrigueresque design, the exterior is built of pink cantera, which is elaborately carved around the front and side entrances.  The interior is noted for its baroque, sculptured style, with altars completely covered in gold leaf. We were very pleased to sit in this beautiful church for two of the concerts we attended.

Not to be missed - The recently installed and sensational twenty-foot high, bronze "horse" doors by CAPELO - Guanajuato artist, ceramist, sculptor and architect.

We left Guanajuato on a drizzly Thursday morning and returned home to Vallarta to similar weather, but warmer. After the latest rains, including a torrential one Saturday evening,  a new, small beach has been formed next to the malecón on the north side of the Cuale bridge.  The skeleton of the drowned goat or sheep on the shore of Rosita beach is now under a rocky mound.
