MLA/FOM Release List of Aligned Candidates for
The Muskoka Lakes Association and Friends of Muskoka are announcing today their Township of Muskoka Lakes (TML) Aligned Candidates List for the upcoming October municipal election. The list reflects those candidates whose views best align with the core values of our respective memberships and have been approved by our respective Boards.
For many years, MLA members have asked the organization to provide more details to help them evaluate the candidates running in the TML municipal election. This year, the MLA and Friends of Muskoka teamed up to provide our most thoughtful evaluation process yet.
In early 2018, the MLA/FOM Political Action Committee began the candidate-review process with one simple but critical question: "What core values do our members believe Muskoka Council members should possess?” After much discussion, our Boards agreed on the following core values:
- The Environment is our Economy, and elected officials must put the Environment First
- No Residential Waterfront Subdivisions on our 100 + commercial resort properties
- We are One Community of Permanent and Seasonal Residents
- Improved Fiscal Responsibility
- Good and Civil Governance
In order to make the evaluation process as objective as possible, we completed the following review work on all candidates in a diligent, even-handed fashion.
A) New Candidates
All new candidates were interviewed by MLA/FOM Political Action Committee members to determine whether their views aligned with our core values. We believe the interview process was critical given new candidates do not have voting histories in Council that we could review. As such, these interviews were highly weighted in our evaluation process.
B) Incumbent Candidates
The MLA actively attends and monitors TML council meetings. As a result, the MLA possesses a rich database of historical voting records for incumbent councillors. These records speak volumes as to the values that motivate our elected officials. In addition, all incumbent candidates were offered an interview by the MLA/FOM Political Action Committee, and a number of incumbents were interviewed. While the interviews were taken into account, the incumbents’ voting records were understandably highly weighted in our evaluation process.
For your convenience we have included a PDF of the TML Aligned Candidates List. We suggest you save it on your computer, print out several copies, and share them with your Muskoka friends and neighbours. We also encourage you to share this email broadly with your Muskoka community. Also included is a PDF of TML Ward boundaries for your reference.
