The Strandline

New York State Marine Education Newsletter

February 2016

Strandline (n): the high water mark; the area at the top of a beach where debris is deposited.

President's Note

I see the year 2016 as an exciting and opportunistic time for NYSMEA and marine education in New York State!

Recently, Thomas Greene from NYSMEA and Kingsborough Community College collaborated to create a program with NYCDOE STEM called Science On the Shore (SOS), OPERATION SEASTAR! – Science, Engineering, And Stewardship To Achieve Resilience. This program is a STEM-based marine environmental science activities program that aims to instill science literacy in K-12 students by engaging them in hands-on lab activities related to real world problems.

Another student opportunity is Beneath the Seas's Marine Career Day for high school and college students on Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center.

NYSMEA is in the beginning stages of organizing a large-scale marine education event on Saturday, May 14, 2016 along Coney Island Creek/Kaiser Park. We are leading a collaborative of many organizations for It’s My Estuary Day. This will be an exciting year to be a part of NYSMEA and to help recruit new members!

I am hoping to see everyone at the next NYSMEA meeting at the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance's office on Sunday, February 21, 2016. We will meet at 11:30 AM at the Waterfront Alliance office and go on a field trip to either South Street Seaport Museum or the Seaport artist studio. At 1:00 PM, we will start the NYSMEA meeting at the Waterfront Alliance office. More details below.

NYSMEA Walk-About and Board Meeting

Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM

We will meet at 11:30 AM at the Waterfront Alliance office and go on a field trip to either South Street Seaport Museum or the Seaport artist studio. At 1:00 PM, we will start the NYSMEA meeting at the Waterfront Alliance office.

Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance
217 Water Street, Suite 300
New York, NY

The Metroplitan Waterfront Alliance office is on the third floor of a corner building at Water and Beekman Streets in the South Street Seaport Historic District. The entrance at 217 Water Street is a walk up to the third floor. You can also enter at 133 Beek Street, where there is an elevator to the third floor. Look for the glass doors at Suite 300, which lead to a conference room.

The nearest subway is the Fulton St. complex of stops.

There is very limited street parking. Parking meters will be in effect at $7.00 per 2 hour limit. The Laz Corp. parking lot kitty-corner from the office, an open air lot, usually has the best price. Enter on Pearl St. between Beekman St. and Peck Slip, and drive up to the little shack to see an attendant.
It's about $16 for weekend parking.
