One Day Without Us

One Day Without Us was a national day of action held on Monday 20th February, aimed at recognising how much those who have made Britain their home have added to society over the years.

VAS organised Swindon's event, where 100 residents from across Swindon joined members of the United Lunch Club for a special gathering. Guests enjoyed food donated from many of the different communities, including dishes from the Caribbean, Pakistan, a number of African countries, Germany, France and Spain.

New Seasons at Open Door

New Seasons is a new group run by the Open Door Centre, for people with a learning disability over the age of 58 years.

The group will start meeting in May at the Community Centre in Gorse Hill every Tuesday afternoon from 1:30pm - 3:30pm. Carers are welcome to come along to support people. The session will cost £2.50 which includes refreshments.

When Stroke Strikes, Act F.A.S.T.

The national Public Health England Act F.A.S.T. campaign aims to raise public awareness of the symptoms of stroke and encourages people who recognise any single one of the symptoms of stroke to call 999 immediately.

The F.A.S.T. acronym is easy to remember, can help people to identify the most common signs of a stroke and emphasises the importance of acting fast by calling 999.

  • Face – has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?
  • Arms – can they raise both arms and keep them there?
  • Speech – is their speech slurred?
  • Time to call 999

Preparing for Adulthood

Preparing for Adulthood: Transition Information Event is for parents, carers and professionals who care for a young person with additional needs. Come along to the drop-in event for information and advice, and to find out what services are available to help you prepare for adulthood.

Kay Reeve, Head of Transitions, Swindon Borough Council will be there to answer your questions, along with service providers including Swindon Mind, Phoenix Enterprises, DHI, Healthwatch and many more.

Vision 4 Wroughton AGM

Vision 4 Wroughton's 2017 AGM will take place at 7:30pm on Wednesday 15th March at Wroughton Bowls Club. The evening has been arranged as a social gathering for the community, to discuss current and future projects, both environmental and social. This includes maintenance of Willow-Brook gardens and Ashen Copse, and organising village events including the Duck Race and Summer Picnic.

Broadgreen Community Litter Pick

Meet at the Broadgreen Community Centre on Wednesday 8th March, 10am - 2pm for a community litter pick. All equipment needed will be supplied.

The Fredericks Foundation provides independent business loans and support when your bank won't. Every application is considered individually; a bad credit score or previous financial issues will not necessarily count against you and your business case.

Groups must be able show that they have previously made an application to a bank or other mainstream lender and have been turned down.

Charity Update Session at VAS

Involve Swindon in partnership with Monahans, Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, invite you to attend a charity update session delivered by James Gare, Partner at Monahans specialising in the not for profit sector. The session will cover topics such as:

  • Pensions auto-enrolment
  • Changes to the new fundraising regulator
  • Tax issues charities face
  • Cyber crime
  • Setting reserves and
  • Fraud awareness

This is a fantastic opportunity to keep up to date with issues that charity managers and trustees need to be aware of and to get the chance to ask questions of an expert with many years’ experience advising the not for profit sector.

Free Money Management Course for Local Residents

Would you like to get to grips with your finances? Do you feel in control of your money or is visiting the cash point always a bit of a lucky dip? Cornerstone Church, in association with CAP (Christians Against Poverty), run free money management courses to help people develop budgeting skills and avoid debt.

CAP Money is a simple, yet highly effective money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a cash-based system that really works. This course will help anyone to get more in control of their finances, so they can save, give and prevent debt.

Their next free course for North Swindon residents will take place on three consecutive Wednesday evenings, starting on 15th March, at 7.30pm at the Redhouse Community Centre.

FSI Small Charity Training

The Foundation for Social Improvement is delivering training for small charities in Bristol on the 4th and 5th of April, offering full day and half day courses on key fundraising skills and governance topics. Training courses include Developing Corporate Relationships and Trusts and Foundations, as well as half day courses for Trustees. Places fill up fast, so book soon.
