Swindon Prostate Cancer Support Group

The Swindon Prostate Cancer Support Group was created for individuals who are both directly or indirectly affected by the disease. It was set up in October 2015 and is fully supported by the Urology - Oncology Department of the Great Western Hospital and in association with Prostate Cancer UK.

The group meets at Great Western Hospital and is open to those who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, families and carers.

Charities and the Public - Who Gives Money?

A new report by NFP Synergy gives explores the giving population. Baby boomers entering retirement represent huge potential for the charity sector not only as donors but also as volunteers, with many living longer, healthier lives.

However, a significant funding chasm is emerging between baby boomers and the preceding generation, who tend both to give more and volunteer in larger numbers. The report discusses the implications of this widening gap in terms of fundraising and volunteering.

Upcoming Events

The Effective Trustee - Training from VAS

Jane Butler of Voluntary Action Swindon will be talking about the role of Charity Trustees (also known as Committee Members or Board Members) at Savernake Street Social Hall on Monday 25th January, from 7:30 – 9pm.

This talk will be helpful for existing Trustees and those considering becoming involved with a charity. It will take the form of a presentation with lots of time for questions. Attendees will:

  • Understand the framework within which charities operate
  • Examine the responsibilities of trustees individually and collectively
  • Look at charity constitutions and how they affect the Board
  • Explore relationships on the Board and with the charity’s staff and volunteers

Heritage Is for Everyone

Voluntary Action Swindon are working with Heritage Lottery Fund to host an HLF Information Event for equalities groups. HLF funds a wide range of projects from £3000 that actively involve people in heritage. This can include, amongst other things: cultural traditions; histories of people, communities, places or events; languages and dialects; people’s memories and experiences.

Community Fundraiser at Swindon Therapy Centre for MS

The MS Therapy Centre have an excellent opportunity for a Community Fundraiser to join their small team of staff to support their Members, Carers and large team of volunteers. This role will be for a period of 12 months with the possibility of grant fund raising opportunities with rewards for success.

As Community Fundraiser, you will co-ordinate their established calendar of Fundraising Events & other fundraising & promotional activities, develop relationships with new and existing donors, be responsible for promoting their work through the local press and other media. You will prepare and co-ordinate funding applications and identify potential areas and avenues of funding for the Therapy Centre.

If you are part of a community group or organisation, you can apply to the Co-operative Community Fund for a grant of up to £2,000. You must be a member of the Midcounties Co-operative. The fund opens on Monday 18th January and closes on Friday 12th February.

Getting investment for digital marketing is tough. The Transform Foundation's first grant opportunity is an £18,000 grant to build an amazing web presence. They are looking to fund charities who have limited investment resources (annual income of under £30 million), an urgent need for digital transformation, and the potential for bigger income and impact.

You can raise funds by asking your supporters to sell unwanted items using eBay for Charity. Your supporters list their items and can choose to donate 10%-100% of the sale to your charity.
