Welcome back...

Ready, set go! The 2017 school year is underway. There has been a real positive buzz around the school over the first few days. Staff have been hard at work over the past few weeks coming together in their new teams and setting up their new learning spaces. It has been great to read some of the letters and view some of the team assemblies that have been going on as teachers introduce themselves to their new learning groups.

Ironkidz - Sunday 26 February 2017

It is just over two weeks before one of the most major events on our school calendar - the 2017 Ironkidz triathlon!
This event is organised by a passionate group of our parents, who put a lot of personal time and effort into making this happen each year. Last year we had over 750 participants and all the money that this event raises comes back to our school! This year the money raised is going towards the purchase a school van. This will be used to help our students across the school access some of the amazing facilities, environment and community events that our great town and area have on offer!

Besides your child/rens participation in the actual triathlon, or the splash 'n' dash, we need your help! There is a huge logistic effort that goes into making an event like this run well and the organising committee would love your commitment to volunteer on the day.

Start of Year Goal Setting & Connection meetings

Besides the opportunity that many of you have already made to touch base with your child's 'homeroom' or 'guardian' teacher there will be a chance to make an appointment during our formal connection meetings. These are scheduled to happen, similar to last year, at a range of different times over the third and fourth school week (20-24 Feb) (27 Feb - 3 March). This will include sessions before school, near the end and at the end of the school day, and some evening slots.

This is one of the opportunities for our teachers to hear from you about your child. As the image below illustrates, the elements below the water line, besides their personal report comments, are all important in making your child who they are. That shared connection and understanding between home and school is imperative to successful learning!

The details to make a booking with your child/rens teacher will come home in next Thursday newsletter.

The Dirt behind the hall...

If you're wondering why there is a mountain of dirt behind the school hall it is because we are building a real pump track. As you can tell, the dirt has arrived and we are now waiting for the Auckland-based company to come down and 'sculpt' our new pump track! It will be awesome when it's done and we're excited about developing this facility for our local community!

2017 building development

During 2017 there are two building projects in the pipeline. Both projects are about prioritising as much school space as possible for learning while also having an easily accessible and efficient admin and staff area.

The first project is scheduled to happen later in Term 1 and is a special needs project. It will include new fencing around the school, a new special needs toilet area and improved student toilets beside Room 6, and a quiet room developed in what was the old boiler room/caretakers shed. This project will also include a new entrance way to what is currently the Room 5 verandah doors.  This will be the new admin area with the staffroom moving into Room 6. The two classes in Rooms 5 & 6 will move over into what is currently the admin/staffroom space - effectively making that whole block, alongside Rooms 1 - 4, the senior school 'hub'.
This then leads into the second project which is scheduled to happen much later in the year. It will see the redevelopment and renovation of Block A (Rooms 1,2,3 & 4 and the existing admin/staffroom space) into a newly designed senior school hub. All those classrooms and that admin area will be revamped, modernised and connected to create an exciting, vibrant and innovative learning area!
Welcome back to a new year at Waipahihi School and a very special welcome to all the new families. We look forward to getting to know you and your families.

Waipahihi School has a very active Friends of the School Committee who are committed to helping support the school in a full range of activities that help bring our parent community together for the good of all our children.

All parents are welcome to attend the meetings as this is a forum for all parents to be involved in the day to day life of their child’s school. Meetings are held once a month. Keep an eye out here in  the school newsletter for more information!
