Welcome to the first newsletter for the 2016 year. The school has been a hive of activity over January as teachers sorted their rooms out and worked with each other to look at their teaching and learning structure for the new year. This also included two formal teacher only days where we pulled together some of the thinking from our vision meetings last term and how this sets the scene for our place. Part of making sure this connects with you is to provide a series of opportunities for you to understand the learning structure at our school and to share your hopes and goals for your own child within that.

This Partnership between Home and School is essential to every child's learning success.

A very important component of our learning culture is the strong partnership between the learner, their parents and their teachers. Much of the research into successful learning, points to the critical role of these relationships. We see the need for open communication, respect and trust as crucial to our school being the best it can be and to seeing our children grow and thrive as learners. At Waipahihi we provide a variety of opportunities for this to occur:
  • 'Meet the Team' Evenings
  • Goal Setting Interviews
  • Newsletters and Facebook
  • School Assemblies
  • After school meetings
Please take the time to take note of the initial opportunities that are detailed below and to make them a priority for your connection with your child's learning journey.

Nga mihi

Term 1 Learning Mapping Meetings

(Please note: This is for all classrooms except New Entrants. They will be holding a transition to school meeting in week 5 and will also be in touch with each family throughout the term.)

An important part of our beginning of the year is to give you the option to book an initial Learning Mapping interview with your child's teacher. This is a chance to bring last years end of year report along and for you to set some learning and social goals for the new school year.

We have again tried to put some optional flexibility into the system for families (and teachers) to choose if this is needed. Both you and the teachers have the right to request a time if one has not been booked and you (or they) think it is needed. The following dates available in Week 3 are:

Tuesday February 16 : 3.30 - 6pm
Wednesday February 17 : 1.45 - 5.45pm; 6.30 - 8pm
Thursday February 18 : 3.30 - 6pm

We are working on creating more space in our learning zones! Do you need a school desk? A chair? Something else?

Come along to our hall and 'donate and take' a piece of surplus furniture.
Gold coin for a chair.

All proceeds go towards new and improved furniture for our school.

School Property Update for February 2016

New Entrant area - The old 'Room 9' is now part of the New Entrant but the wall removal and door replacement will happen sometime during Term 1. When this happens the existing walkway will be fenced off so the room connects naturally to the new entrant area and the 'traffic flow' redirected.
Walkways - The walkways / access around school will be changed when the old Room 9 (pictured above) development is completed. This will tie in nicely with our board walk development of the He Manu Whenua initiative through the Rainbow garden and behind the back of Rooms 17 & 18 and out behind what is currently Room 14. A walkway between the back of the New Entrant area and the swimming pool will be opened up as well. The bay will be removed outside Rooms 7 & 8 (with hooks put on the outside walls of classrooms) to enable better flow in and out of the central area.
