Dear GEN Newsletter subscriber,

Here in Findhorn, in the north of Scotland, the darkness has drawn in. When the sun breaks through it is golden and strong, but not for long... The winter solstice, the longest night of the year, is palpable.

As in so many traditions, we celebrate by lighting candles and reminding ourselves that it is in the darkest hour that the tides change and the light starts returning. The symbolism is apt for our times. Even while in many places power continues to be vested in those that destroy future for short term profit, we are watching as consciousness spreads with Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion taking to the street and more and more people expressing their love and care for place, community, life in tangible ways.

Many of our communities on the ground have been existentially threatened by climate change or war and our hearts go out to all of these places. Many individuals in our networks have been personally challenged by health or loss of loved ones and our hearts go out to all of you, too.

We have had a strong year in GEN, with a new Board and a dedicated staff team stepping up in their leadership. Together, we have engaged in soul searching, and continuing to question and refine GEN's processes, objectives and targets as network of networks in order to stay attuned to the changing times.

GEN inspires communities for a regenerative world, scaling up ecovillage development to support an adequate response to the climate emergency and the implementation of the SDGs.

At COP25, whilst the negotiations were sticky and focussed on issues of carbon trade rather than the radical transformation of human presence on this planet that is so desperately needed, GEN signed or deepened agreements with The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo, Liberia and Burkina Faso for the national implementation of ecovillage development programmes. An agreement with DRCongo was also signed. but with a letter of support from the President, rather than an agreement with the Minister of Environment. In combination with our existing programmes and more than 6000 communities and initiatives in 114 countries, GEN has grown into a tapestry of hope, with each of our projects on the ground as a possible entrance point.

The doors are wide open and we are invited to share our solutions in ever bigger circles of influence. We need all of us, our skill, capacity and wisdom to fulfil the unfolding possibilities.

From 1-10 February 2020, GEN will host our second online summit 'Communities for Future - Our Response to the Climate Emergency', building on our summit this year, which drew more than 10.000 participants. Please share with your networks and sign up here: https://summit2020.ecovillage.org/.

It is with gratitude to each and every one of you for your contribution and care, for the gift of your time and energy, that we now take some rest. Thank you for all you have done - we are not able to do this without you!

May you and your loved ones and all the communities around you be safe and well, hopeful and inspired as we step into the festive season and the New Year.

With much love,

Kosha Anja Joubert
Executive Director
Global Ecovillage Network

The Communities for Future Summit is an entirely free, online experience hosted by the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN). From the 1 to 10 February 2020 we will daily unlock 3 interviews with well known thought leaders, change makers, indigenous elders, community lovers and youth activists from around the planet.

Young people are taking to the streets, demanding that we all take urgent action on the climate and planetary crisis. GEN is picking up the baton and inviting all of us to manifest the needed change now, protecting, restoring and transforming in our communities, municipalities and countries.

How to start an Ecovillagew with few resources?

'I sincerely hope that our story will inspire other dreamers and visionaries who, like us, want to set up projects around the world in the coming years (ecovillage or other). I leave you with this wonderful quote that represents us well: “They did not know it was impossible, so they did it”.'

Simon Leclerc, co-founder of Terre de la Reunion, an intentional community in the Laurentians, Quebec, Canada, shared with us his article Starting an Ecovillage with Few Resources - The story of a successful experience. Read the full article: https://ecovillage.org/starting-with-few-resources/
