Dearest network, we have been dreaming...

Of what it would look like to truly be a network-supported, network-supporting organization. We have been dreaming about what our dear friend John Croft's idea of the fifth sector of our economy (Community Enterprise Strategic Partnerships) could look like for the ecovillage movement.

Borrowing John's  powerfully generative question, we ask, "How can we support your work?" The power of this network lies in you, in your heart, in your realized and unrealized dreams, and in the change which you are working to bring to your communities - all - over - the - world. We celebrate you.
If each of our readers can donate an average of 1£ after reading each newsletter, we can support the majority of our core work. Coincidingly, we believe that the news of this movement should be accessible to all. So, we welcome you into an experiment...

If you enjoy our monthly newsletter, would like to support our work at GEN, and have the ability to do so, please donate. We mean it when we say all contributions are cherished... we believe in the power of 1£.

In reciprocity, we offer our annual Hildur Jackson Award, a staff opening, a collection of the resources and impact co-created in 2022, and as always monthly updates from the inspiring work of our global projects, regions, and partners.
Each year, together with the Gaia Trust and thanks to the incredible generosity of Ross Jackson in honour of his dear Hildur, we are delighted to welcome applications for this recognition and resource infusion of 3000 Euros.

Particularly, we're looking for projects with innovative character, impact, and longevity. We're especially keen to welcome those who align with the developments in GEN and have a close link to the network and region.

Past winners have blended community, land, and education. They've empowered young refugees with Permaculture. And transformed an experimental eco-development into a thriving ecovillage.

Ecovillage Resilience Project

This month, the Community of Practice concluded the deep dive part of the journey, identifying abilities and skills for building personal and interpersonal resilience in light of the polycrisis. The goal was to create shared understanding and language around what conditions could enable more inner resilience leading to more explicit abilities individually and collectively in order to intentionally face the polycrisis. By naming the inner dimensions of resilience, we can create a narrative to track what enables and prohibits collective abilities and how that may change over time. By ability, we refer to the capacity to perceive, feel, and receive, and from there enter into relationships with the world around us, including both tangible and subtle aspects. In this way, ability can be described as an interface that can take many shapes, forms, and expressions and that is evolved over time through experiences. Collective abilities can be seen as the preconditions necessary for building a shared leadership culture – a way of being in relationship with each other, the greater context, and the task at hand.

Anyone is invited to join us in this reflection by navigating the first step in our activity. Ask yourselves and/or your community:

  • What ability is well established and rooted in the shared culture (of the ecovillage)?  This could be a shared relational quality that attracted people together initially. This is the foundational ability.
  • What ability can be built in order to achieve the mission or vision( of the ecovillage)? What ability can help the group attain greater resilience? This is the aspirational ability.
  • What ability can support the process of moving from the current ability to a desired ability? What serves as a bridge to support evolution and growth? This is the bridging ability.

Youth in Action - Sprouts for the Future

Action plans focusing on waste management, community gathering, biodiversity restoration, natural building, and growing food are getting their finishing touches from the five school partners in the Youth in Action- Sprouts for the Future project. To help guide them through the participatory process, each school community is now connecting with their local mentor who brings expertise and support, in addition to what we've generated in our global community of practice.

At Springhouse Community School, they will welcome the Director of Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary who is also an educator, farmer, author, and student of nature. He is an active contributor to the biodynamic agriculture and natural beekeeping movements and regularly teaches at conferences in the U.S., around the world, and online.

At Uba Qynza, they will weave in the wisdom of a biotechnologist, herbalist, homeopath, botanist, ecologist, and naturopathic doctor. He currently has 130 innovative productive initiatives and biotechnology inventions that he aspires will generate sustainable development for Colombia. He represents an exceptional bridge between indigenous knowledge, peasant knowledge, and cutting-edge naturist technological knowledge.

Stay tuned to learn about our other mentors and how the implementation goes...

ReGEN4All: Bridging Ecovillage Research & Practice

The GEN Research Group, as part of the ReGEN4all project, warmly invites ecovillage members, researchers, educators, and activists to an online discussion on how ecovillage research could have a greater impact on society.

By connecting different stakeholders, this virtual exchange seeks to clarify how ecovillage research is currently used (or not) by practitioners, educators, and activists; how it can become more accessible; and also what kind of research is needed at this point. The ReGEN4all project seeks to explore the potential of collaborations and to bridge the gaps between academia and ecovillages, including activists, educators, and policy-makers.
