Research Commentary

eCALD® Research Commentary [3rd Edition] March 2017

This month the research commentary focuses on the launch of the newly published International Benchmarking of Asian Health Outcomes for Waitemata and Auckland DHBs report. Disparities highlighted in the report include a greater risk of CVD in South Asian populations. The review also features four articles which explore the internationally well-known PODOSA (Prevention of Diabetes & Obesity in South Asians) study. PODOSA is a model of best practice for community-based strategies to prevent CVD/diabetes/obesity in South Asian populations. Additionally the commentary also promotes the New Zealand nutrition resources Healthy Eating for South Asian People in English, Gujarati, Hindi and Punjabi.

Caring for Asian Children: Culture & Health - A Resource for Health Providers

eCALD® is pleased to launch a BRAND NEW resource!! The “Caring for Asian Children: Culture and Health - A Resource for Health Providers” is written for health providers caring for Asian children and young people and their families. It provides an overview and perspective on Asian children and their families including, their health status, health needs and the socio-cultural issues affecting Asian children’s health in New Zealand. The resource offers a general guide with strategies on how to be culturally effective and responsive to Asian families when caring for their children.


NZ Health System

NZ Health System [Podcast videos and Factsheets] in multiple languages

Waitemata and Auckland DHBs have made available podcast videos and factsheets about the New Zealand Health System for improving new migrants’ understanding of the health system. The podcast videos are available in English, Mandarin and Hindi and the factsheets are available in English, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Hindi.

Waitemata and Auckland DHBs have made available these posters for newcomers or new migrants who are not familiar with healthcare services. The poster is available in English, Simplified Chinese and Korean languages.

ProCare Diabetes Programmes

Diabetes Self-Management Education in Cantonese/Mandarin and Punjabi Languages - Auckland [March 2017]

Procare PHO is offering community self-management education to anyone who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes or caring for someone with Type 2 Diabetes who are interested to improve their knowledge and information on managing Type 2 diabetes. Education programmes will be provided in Cantonese/Mandarin and Punjabi languages. Please feel free to refer or promote these education opportunity to Chinese or Punjabi speaking patients or families who could benefit from it. Registration is essential.
