Dear Partners, Colleagues and Friends…
We are happy to present you the 2nd newsletter of our new project “Plan Be: Active Senior Volunteers”!
Through these newsletters we will inform you about the main project achievements, and we will be glad if you wish to follow us closer…

‘Plan Be: Active Senior Volunteers'
It’s a two year European project between organizations from Portugal, Italy, Slovenia and Finland, under the Erasmus+ Programme - Strategic Partnerships in Adult Education, funded by the European Commission. The focus will be on the creation and promotion of an Active Ageing Program through active citizenship and involvement in volunteer work, addressing issues such as European citizenship, nature and environment, interculturality, social inclusion and others.

Why Volunteering is important for “active ageing”?

Demographic ageing is one of the major challenges for many societies and ‘active ageing’ has become a priority policy within the European Union. The link between volunteering, active ageing and citizenship have never been closer. According to the questionnaires completed in our project by 88 seniors, volunteerism is an opportunity of “Understanding” (it permits them new learning experiences and the chance to exercise knowledge, skills, and abilities that might otherwise go unpractised), “Values” (it provides for individuals to express values related to altruistic and humanitarian concerns for others) and “Enhancement” (the individual is seeking to grow and develop psychologically through involvement in volunteering).

More about project research, which was made within 1st project phase and presents a basis for all further project activities:
All countries involved in the project presented several good practices in the field of encouragement of active ageing, at the same time they are facing with challenges in this field… Most part of the existing initiatives seem to include a limited form of participation, with seniors as end-users of the project, not involving them in the whole process.
We also carried out an empirical study, which included 88 senior people from all partner countries. Research results show that from the 88 seniors inquired, 45% are already involved in volunteering activities, and the most interesting thematic areas for them to volunteering are Social Solidarity, Culture and Arts and Health. Most of the seniors prefer working with children, young people and the elderly. The main motivation for volunteering they find in their personal satisfaction, in the need for "helping others" and "keeping busy". Detailed results of the survey are presented here
2nd meeting in Bitonto, Italy
The second transnational meeting was held in Bitonto (Italy) in mid-March 2016 and was the opportunity to discuss with the partners the implementation of the project and the research carried out in each country. After that, we defined 8 modules for the design of the innovative training for senior volunteers. The modules have been assigned to each partner based on the characteristics of their organizations.
