Pass HEROES covid bill in Senate

Call/write our US Senators (Merkley, Wyden).

I’m calling/writing to urge you to work for the passage of the HEROES Act in the Senate. Passed last week in the House, it’s a much-needed $3 trillion coronavirus relief bill.

The bill provides nearly $1 trillion for the state, local, and tribal governments that are suffering as the lack of tax revenue during this crisis is forcing them to slash social programs from their budgets. It provides direct payments to individuals, hazard pay for essential workers, money for coronavirus testing and contact tracing, unemployment benefits, housing support, student loan forgiveness, and food stamp money. It also provides for universal mail-in ballots, and $25 billion for the United States Postal Service.

Both the president and Senate Republicans have vowed to kill the bill, which makes your work even more essential. Every one of the items in the Act is needed and worth fighting for.

Phone Banking for Ballot-by-Mail in Arizona

Reach out to AZ voters and get them signed up for the permanent early ballot so they can receive their ballot by mail.

Click here for the Open Phone Bank.

This is a big deal, and needs our volunteer help. Arizona is one of the 12 target “Super States” for November 2020, and is a bastion of Republican voter suppression.

Beyond Shukran

In her blog yesterday, Prof. Heather Cox Richardson wrote,

The story broke today that Steven Linick, the State Department Inspector General Trump has announced he is removing, was not simply looking into whether Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his wife Susan had used staff members for personal errands.

Linick was finishing up an investigation of Pompeo’s decision last year to approve billions of dollars in arms sales to Saudi Arabia against the wishes of a bipartisan majority in Congress. State Department officials were recently briefed on the inspector general’s conclusions.”

Prof. Richardson reviews the recent history (she is a historian, after all) of Jamal Kashoggi’s murder, Trump’s refusal to acknowledge crown prince Mohammed bin Salman’s role in it, Jared Kushner and Rick Perry sharing (selling?) U.S. nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia, and Pompeo approving the sale of $8.1 billion of arms to primarily Saudi Arabia despite congressional disapproval.

Shall we go out on a limb again and guess that the Trump administration was hoping to keep the whole story of the Saudi arms sales out of the public eye by getting rid of that pesky, inquisitive Inspector General? Maybe we’ll hear more about this.

It doesn’t matter how much money you make if everyone around you is hungry and sick …Our society and democracy only works when we think not just about ourselves, but about each other.”

- Barack Obama, in his national graduation speech 5/2020

This is the first U.S. presidential election in which "Vote Him Out Before He Kills You and Your Family" is a wholly reasonable slogan for the challenger.”

By the way, you never needed to learn the name of Dr. Fauci during the Ebola Crisis because @BarackObama just f***ing took his advice.”
