Help Wanted for GA Runoffs!

Georgia flipped blue for Biden this month, the first time since 1992 that a Dem presidential candidate carried the state. Now Dems Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock are both in critical runoff races for the US Senate positions in Georgia. The stakes are VERY high - control of the Senate, and thus the effectiveness of the Biden presidency.

The NYT notes that the “crazy” GA runoff system (that winner must have over 50% of total vote, rather than a plurality) is the vestige of segregationist efforts to dilute Black voting power, but states that the combination of demographic and cultural changes and Dem energy may overcome that. We WILL overcome that! We ARE those Dems!

So how to best help with the runoffs?

First, donate if you can: Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock, Stacey Abrams’ FairFight .
Then pick one (or both) campaigns and volunteer to do what the campaigns say they want/need most from out-of-state volunteers:

What about letter-writing and postcarding?

There are reputable national letter-writing and postcarding groups doing these activities because…that’s what they do. Indivisible National leaders did on-the-ground interviews with GA campaign support groups and the candidates’ campaign leaders, and were told what they need and want from out-of-state volunteers is phonebanking, followed by texting.

Phones, not pens

Soooo, fellow activists, put away your pens (for now) and get out your phones. Give them what they need. Not keen on phonebanking? It’s what’s needed. The stakes are VERY high - control of the Senate, and thus the effectiveness of the Biden presidency. We can do this!

Moving Forward

TIME to FIX: Timber corps hurting OR rural communities by avoiding taxes

Recent articles (1, 2) have shown that Oregon's timber corporations don't pay their fair share of taxes. For decades these corporations have worked to incrementally reduce their tax liability, and, as a result, rural communities have suffered.

Concerned Oregonians are exploring ways to reinstate fair timber taxes to fill the hole left in Oregon's rural county budgets created by the elimination of the tax that helped to pay for county services. State legislative counsel is drafting the citizen legislative concept to reinstate a severance timber tax to 1990 levels and redirect that funding to local communities and support watershed restoration, water and emergency preparedness infrastructure. It would also provide a tax reduction to those companies that switch to more environmentally-sound forestry practices.

REMINDER: Stay alert. Stay tuned.

We’re not out of the woods yet in terms of difficulties related to Trump and his minions. ICG leadership will alert our members pronto if there is any need/plan for grassroots resistance.

If a rally or other event is called, remember our basics: nonviolence, personal safety, de-escalate conflict, mutual respect, take care of each other, use covid precautions (masks and distancing).

Do not be baited. Proud boys and others Trumpers are rallying in major cities, often instigating confrontations and violence. Similar could happen here. Don’t play ball. Stay away. Ignore. Don’t engage. We don’t want to give Trump or his terrorists any foothold for actions in our community.

ICG will communicate about protests/actions in two ways:
    1. Posts on ICG’s Facebook page, and
    2.  Emergency action email to all our newsletter subscribers.

President Trump’s first and final contribution to the nation’s civic health will be [has been] to have motivated a voter turnout rate not seen for more than a century. - George Will (Washington Post 10/29/2020).
