This photo didn't make the cut for the bulletin on Sunday
(in favor of another photo from the same day).
It's the Space Shuttle Endeavor headed to the International Space Station.
Amber and I got to watch the launch because she had an experiment on board.

The Session of Edgewood Presbyterian Church has called a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, August 4th
to elect the Officer Nominating Committee
and to vote on a change to the start and end of terms for officers.
Grace to you, and peace...
I want to pass on a heap of thanks from EPC member Bob Burney. Bob had some church visitors on Sunday -- his birthday -- who brought a cake and much joy. They also delivered a special piece of artwork that our Sunday School kids and many others prepared for him, thanks to Kathy Silvie. You'll never know how much Bob appreciates the love he feels from his church family. (Bob just describes us as his "family.")
In other good family news, at the Session meeting on Sunday, Annette Calamusa and Sabra Hatch became EPC members! You'll learn more about them in the upcoming Epistle, and by walking up to them and introducing yourselves.
This is the final week of Presbyterian Kickball (Thursday, 5:30 p.m. at Southminster Presbyterian Church)
If you haven't joined us previously, let me try to entice you with the presence of the pastor's famous brother -- star of many sermon stories -- who will be our secret EPC ringer.
We'll stay on terra firma this week -- or as much as we can while encountering the Apostle Paul. We'll read the introduction to his letter to the Romans on the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost, and everything else in worship will return to normal. Well, "Edgewood normal." Y'all really don't let it ever get boring here. Thanks for that.
Elder Rick Frennea has suggested that we make an afternoon rush on Gatos and Beans -- Birmingham's first cat cafe, just opened by EPCers Stephen and Kelli Steward. If you'd like to go in and visit the cats, head to the website to make a reservation. Meet up with Rick on Sunday for any other details. Amber and I visited on their first day opened, and it really is a delightful place.
You've hopefully noticed above that Session has called a meeting of the congregation on August 4th (at the close of worship, should hopefully last just a few minutes). There are two items on the agenda. The first is the election of the Officer Nominating Committee -- a fairly standard thing for us! Second, we are looking for congregational approval to change the timing of terms for Elders and Deacons.
Essentially, we want to shift everything by three months, so that terms end at the end of September and new officers begin in October. Currently that transition happens December/January. So why the switch?
Scheduling ordination and installation of officers -- and the needed training before they start their terms -- is a bit of a nightmare, working around Christmas and the beginning of January with holiday travel. The idea here is that new Elders and Deacons could be ordained and installed in the fall, giving those acts the attention and reverence they deserve. Elders would have a few months on Session before the holidays and would be able to have input on the budget they will be overseeing.
This idea has the unanimous support of both the Session and the Board of Deacons.
If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email ahead of the meeting on August 4th.
Coming attractions for the next few weeks:
August 4th -- we've been invited to join First Presbyterian Birmingham for a potluck lunch and conversation with their special guest, the Rev. Scott Clark, co-moderator of More Light Presbyterians. I'll head that way immediately following worship/congregational meeting -- all are welcome to come talk about being a More Light congregation in 2019. Sunday School will be cancelled for all.
August 11th - (note -- I had the wrong date last week!) Blessing of the Backpacks!
August 18th - a special guest musician from the Birmingham Youth Group
August 21st - First FellowshipSupper
August 25th - Rally Day! Potluck in Barron Hall
August 28th - What I Did on My Summer Vacation -- hard deadline for photo submission: August 25th. (No, really, we're serious.)
