M Research: News from the University of Michigan

History of violence

Youth violence is the second-leading cause of death for people ages 15-24. It results in nearly 700,000 emergency room visits by young people each year. Those figures do not sit well with U-M researchers who are working with community groups to reduce youth violence and spark change in neighborhoods stricken by crime.

Slow down aging

The discovery of a protein could reduce the effects of free radicals, which are shown to cause cell damage and death, aging and disease.

Persistent fatigue

Fatigue is one of the most common long-term effects of breast cancer treatment. Acupressure could offer a low-cost way to manage this symptom.

Positive vibes

People who work with leaders that exude positive energy tend to do more work outside their official roles and have more satisfying family lives.

Blunt response

Excitement is a common reaction to a winning lottery ticket. But over time, marijuana use can dampen the brain's response to such reward.

Water weight

The link between hydration and weight is not clear, but water intake deserves more attention when addressing obesity on a population level.

Costly stay

How expensive was your last hospital visit? Even with good health insurance, hospital stays can cost patients more than $1,000 out of pocket.

In perspective

Media representations
Professor Muniba Saleem studies how media representations of Muslims fuel anti-Muslim hostility and policies in America.
"Because so few Americans personally know Muslims, media depictions of them as terrorists are especially potent, leading many to believe that all Muslims are terrorists."
