Flint Provider Empowerment Program

The Provider Empowerment Program, led by Toko Oshio at the University of Michigan-Flint and Jeff Kupperman, supports child care providers throughout Flint by addressing serious challenges and unmet needs of families impacted by the water crisis. Their efforts have helped connect license-exempt and Family, Friend and Neighbor (FFN) child care providers with important support mechanisms and resources, while working to address government policies that inhibit participation in the child care subsidy system.

In Perspective: What is chaos? A complex systems scientist explains

In a chaotic world, you never know what to expect. Stuff is happening all the time, driven by any kind of random impulse. But chaos has a deeper meaning in connection to physics and climate science, related to how certain systems – like the weather or the behavior of a toddler – are fundamentally unpredictable. U-M assistant professor Mitchell Newberry explains how theories of chaos and randomness help scientists sort out which kinds of predictions make sense and which do not.
